The read
Game 2 at Kauffman. The White Sox are one win and one Texas loss from clinching a playoff spot. The Royals are out of the race and playing their final homestand as spoilers. Bryan Hudson opens for Chicago against Seth Lugo, and the market barely favors the road side.
My bet rests on two things. The first is Lugo against this lineup. Left-handed hitters have an .872 OPS and 14 HR against him in 410 AB, and Chicago starts six lefties plus a switch-hitter. His 5.06 ERA comes with a 5.09 xERA, so it isn't bad luck waiting to even out. His results match how he's pitching. He has given up 7 HR over his last five starts and hasn't gone past five innings in any of them. That leads to the second thing: Kansas City's bullpen will probably have to cover about four innings. That pen has a 5.04 season ERA, and its top two arms gave away late leads or ties three straight days in Pittsburgh. Pearson came in tied 5-5 on Sep 18, Cruz came in up 5-4 on Sep 19, and Pearson came in up 3-2 on Sep 20. Kansas City lost all three.
The best argument against me is the ballpark. Kauffman plays at 0.94, the wind is 9 mph in from right, and that works directly against the lefty pull power I'm counting on. Lugo's season ERA is 4.07 at home against 6.10 on the road, and Chicago is 35-44 away from home. I also don't fully trust Fedde's recent run. His 5 earned runs in 28.2 innings rest on roughly a .230 BABIP, so I'm treating him as closer to his 3.90 season ERA. Still, Lugo's last three home starts produced 11 earned runs in 17.0 innings, so the home split hasn't protected him lately. Hudson (3.10 xERA) and Fedde should leave less of this game to Chicago's bullpen than Lugo leaves to Kansas City's. Hagen Smith (1.16 ERA) and Grant Taylor (2.45) both sat out last night, though no one has confirmed who is available.
At -116 I'm paying close to a coin-flip price for the side with the better pitching matchup early and late, and the only team with something at stake tonight. I'm taking the moneyline over the run line because Kauffman keeps games close enough that I want the win, not the margin.

Over the last week he is 1 for 14, and last night he went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
The lineup spot helps the under less than I'd like. Batting second gets him about 3.6 plate appearances a night. He also walks enough (17 in his short season, 0.5 per game) to take some of those away as chances for a hit. If you assume three to four real at-bats at his batting average against righties, a hitless night comes out in the mid-40s percent range. The price is paying me as though that were closer to 40.
The strongest case against me is the opposing pitcher. Lugo allows a .307 average and an .872 OPS to left-handers, and that is a real problem for him. That split describes Lugo against lefties in general, though, and tells me nothing specific about Teel. Teel is 1 for 1 against Lugo in his career, which is too small a sample to count. He is also a rookie catcher with only 107 big league at-bats, so his true talent could be better than this line, and one blooper settles it. I'll take plus money on a hitter who fails to get a hit two out of three nights.
