The read
Rubber game by the Bay: two eliminated clubs split the first two games at Oracle Park, and it comes down to a pair of lefties on a calm 68-degree afternoon. My bet rests on which starter lasts longer and who has to pitch after him. Connor Prielipp strikes out 9.3 batters per nine innings, and his curveball has allowed a .168 xwOBA with a 36.4% whiff rate. Over their last three games, the Giants have missed on 31.0% of their swings. Cesar Perdomo gets few strikeouts and is getting hit hard: 5.6 per nine, 46.9% hard-hit contact allowed, and a four-seamer he throws 46.3% of the time that has allowed a .435 xwOBA. His ERA is 3.72 and his xERA is 4.92, so anyone backing San Francisco because of that ERA is paying for a fragile number.
How deep each starter goes is what decides it for me. Perdomo's three MLB starts ended at 83, 74 and 83 pitches, and the last two lasted 4.2 innings each. If he does that again, the Giants' bullpen has to get about 13 outs. A Sep 17 report ranked that bullpen second-worst in MLB in strikeout-minus-walk rate, at 9.8%, and nearly all of it throws right-handed. Minnesota benched Walker Jenkins, Kody Clemens and Alan Roden against the lefty starter, so all three left-handed bats are available to pinch-hit late. Both Twins homers off Giants relievers this series came from left-handed hitters: Emmanuel Rodriguez off Jason Foley and Jenkins off Duncan Davitt. Prielipp went 7.0 innings on 92 pitches last time out. His one clear weakness is left-handed hitters (.808 OPS), and the Giants' lefty starters are Turner Hill, Marcelo Mayer and Bo Davidson, who is playing his third MLB game.
The best argument against this is Minnesota's own bullpen. Jeff Hoffman, A.J. Minter, Andrew Morris and Kody Funderburk all pitched last night, and there is no report on whether any of them is available today. If Derek Shelton holds them back, the late innings could go to Yoendrys Gómez, who has a 9.82 ERA over the last 30 days. The Giants do have Trent Harris, who has allowed no earned runs in 14.0 innings over that same stretch. That bullpen risk is why I'm taking the moneyline instead of laying 1.5 runs. I still land on Minnesota. The gap between the starters is the most reliable edge in this game, and Perdomo's short outings push more innings onto the weaker bullpen. I'll pay -154.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Connor Prielipp: 3.06 ERA over his last 3 starts
3.06Six earned runs over his last three starts, 17.2 innings, is what built Connor Prielipp's 3.06 ERA, with his WHIP down to 0.91 compared with a 1.30 season mark. Both numbers moving the same direction, fewer runs and fewer baserunners, reads more like real improvement than a lucky stretch. It's only three starts against a 4.94 season ERA, so the sample stays small even with the signs pointing the same way. For MIN @ SF, he's sharper right now than his season line suggests, though three starts hasn't erased the full season track record.
COOLING OFF
Ryan Jeffers: .361 OPS in L15, draws LHP Cesar Perdomo
.361Jeffers is at .361 over only 31 AB, far below his .812 season mark, and a few hits would change that fast. Cesar Perdomo is a lefty, and Jeffers has an .802 OPS against lefties over 111 AB, close to his season number. His full season is the better guide tonight.
Royce Lewis: .355 OPS in Last 15 Days
.355A .355 OPS over his last 47 at bats is down from .670 for the season. Forty seven at bats is enough to notice but still a short window, so this reads as a cold two weeks rather than a permanent step down. With Minnesota playing San Francisco next, the recent stretch should carry more weight in this matchup until his numbers climb back toward .670.
REGRESSION
Jonah Cox: .272 AVG vs .216 xBA
.216Cox is getting better results than his contact has earned: a .320 wOBA when the quality of his batted balls points to .265. It's only 153 plate appearances, so a few bloop hits and seeing-eye grounders can inflate a line like this. Gaps this size tend to shrink as the at-bats pile up, so his current line probably makes him look like a better hitter than he is. For tonight's MIN @ SF game, value him by the .216 xBA and .265 xwOBA more than by the .272 average when you look at his hit or on-base numbers.

1- GARY'S PICKAUSTIN MARTINH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
I'm taking Austin Martin under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -109. He has gone over this line in only 2 of his last 15 games, and one of those was a single eight-count night. In the other 14 he posted 0, 1 or 2 just once. He is 1 for 16 in September and hasn't played in any of the Twins' last three games, so he comes in cold. He's hitting .232 with 3 home runs in 298 at-bats, which gives him very little chance to cover the line with one swing. Much of his .343 on-base percentage comes from walks, and walks don't count here. He averages 1.3 per game over 103 games, but a few big nights pull that average up. His normal game ends at zero or one.
The case for the over is the batting order and the matchup. He bats second today against a left-hander, which is his better side: a .751 OPS in 136 at-bats against lefties compared with .582 against righties. Cesar Perdomo's four-seamer has allowed a .435 xwOBA, and he has allowed 46.9% hard contact, although that comes from only three big-league starts. Josh Bell and Brooks Lee hit behind Martin, so one single could easily become a hit and a run. That is how he gets to two. I still see a cold part-time bat who will probably get three or four plate appearances in a pitcher's park on a getaway day. I'll take the under at close to even money.
