The read
Series opener under a closed roof in Arlington, two left-handers with nearly identical ERAs, and a market that wants you to believe the division race settles it. It doesn't. This game hinges on which lefty's recent trouble is the fixable kind, and that question has a clear answer. Over his last five starts MacKenzie Gore has walked 17 and struck out 11 — an inverted ratio over five outings is not bad luck, it's a command problem. His most recent start he threw 36 of 69 pitches for strikes, with the manager, pitching coach and head trainer all walking to the mound together, and he's failed to finish five innings in four of his last five. Sean Manaea's ERA over the same stretch looks just as ugly, but underneath it he has 19 strikeouts against 4 walks in 27.2 innings with his strike rate climbing in three straight outings. One of these guys knows where the ball is going.
The best argument against me is real and I'm not dodging it: Manaea gets hurt by right-handed bats — .275 and an .856 OPS with 18 home runs in 371 at-bats — and Texas runs seven righties tonight. That's the honest counter. Here's why I'm still on New York. Hitting home runs requires squaring the ball up, and over the last three games the Rangers have averaged 87.8 mph off the bat with a 36.8% hard-hit rate and 5.9% barrels, while the Mets sit at 90.5 mph, 47.5% and 8.8% with a lower whiff and chase rate. The 3-7 team has been hitting the ball better than the 6-4 team. Manaea's damage is also time-bounded — 3.51 ERA through five innings, 7.68 from the sixth on — and an eliminated club has no reason on earth to push him past the wobble.
Texas has the opposite pressure and a thinner margin behind it, having lost Cal Quantrill for the season two days ago with starters covering relief innings all week. Add Juan Soto, who carries a 1.005 OPS with two outs and runners in scoring position against a Texas middle where Wyatt Langford (.357) and Josh Jung (.568) disappear in that same spot, plus today's loss of Joc Pederson's .816 OPS from the DH slot. At +110 — with one book already down to +100 — I'll take the dog.

COOLING OFF
Ezequiel Duran: .436 OPS in Last 15 Days
.436Duran's .436 over 50 at bats is 0.319 below his .755 season line. Two weeks of soft contact or bad matchups pulls a number down fast. The season line is the stronger read against the Mets.
TEAM RECORD
Rangers 6-2 in MacKenzie Gore's last 8 starts
6-2Six wins in eight is his full season mark, folding in his own work along with the offense and bullpen around him. Two losses leaves the sample small enough that one or two results could shift it. He starts at home against the Mets, with the 6-2 log as the number going in.

2- GARY'S PICKMACKENZIE GOREPITCHER OUTS UNDER 13.5
Thirteen and a half outs is four and two thirds innings, and the under is the cheaper side of this market at -105. Gore has not gotten there in three straight starts: 12 outs, 12 outs, 9 outs, on pitch counts of 69, 76 and 68. He has cleared it once in his last five. The number the market is anchored to is his season average of 15.5 outs across 32 starts, and his September has stopped resembling that season.
What is driving the short outings is command. Nine walks against three strikeouts across those last three starts, 17 against 11 across five. Walks are the fastest route to a 70-pitch fourth inning. His last time out he threw 36 of 69 pitches for strikes, the manager, pitching coach and head trainer walked to the mound together in the second, and he finished with his velocity down across the board. He is tied for the American League lead in starts, which is the other half of this: Texas has leaned on him all year and is now managing recurring back spasms in the final week. The club says it has a plan. The last three versions of that plan came out to 69, 76 and 68 pitches.
The situation compounds it. Texas is one game up in the West with six to play, Skip Schumaker has said out loud that he is counting outs, and this month he pulled deGrom at 4.1 innings, Rocker at 4.1 and Quantrill at 1.1. Nobody in that bullpen threw yesterday, and Eovaldi, Trevor Williams, Montgomery and Bradford are all capable of multiple innings tonight, so there is no reason to stretch a pitcher who is being monitored. The honest case against me: the Mets are 18-26 against left-handed starters and hit .231 with a .682 OPS versus lefties, and Gore at home has averaged nearly five and a half innings across 15 starts with a 3.53 ERA. A passive lineup can hand him a quick fifth inning. At this price I will take the version of Gore who has shown up for three weeks.
- GARY'S PICKCARSON BENGETOTAL BASES OVER 0.5
Total bases over 0.5 at -175 asks for one hit in what should be four trips. Benge hits fifth, averages 4.2 plate appearances a game and has played 149 of the team's 156 games, so the volume is settled. He is batting .275 with a .419 slugging percentage on the season, and he carries no platoon hole: .269 with a .728 OPS in 156 at-bats against left-handers, .278 and .769 against right-handers. He has recorded a base in each of his last four games and 10 of his last 15, and he is hitting .333 with two home runs over the past week.
MacKenzie Gore has not been the left-hander who erases left-handed bats this year. He has allowed a .259 average and a .734 OPS in 158 at-bats from that side, a shade worse than the .238 and .719 he has allowed to righties, and only two of the 19 home runs he has given up have come off lefty bats. The shape of the damage against him from this side is singles and doubles, which is precisely what this line settles on. Benge has no career at-bats against him, so there is no history pulling either direction.
The price is the problem and I will say so plainly. At -175 this needs to land better than 63 percent of the time, and he has been blanked in five of his last 15 games. Texas plays the cleaner defense by a wide margin, 66 errors and a .988 fielding percentage against 91 and .983 for New York, and that turns a couple of his soft ground balls into outs. If Gore leaves early the Rangers can run three left-handers at him late, led by Jacob Latz, who has a 2.08 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP over 69.1 innings and has not pitched in three days. I still want the at-bats.
