The read
At plus money, I’m backing the more complete team. Chicago is 73-65 with a +45 run differential; Houston is 70-69 with a -44 differential. The White Sox are also 53-43 against right-handed starters, and tonight’s nine are hitting .246 over the last seven days compared with .174 for Houston’s lineup.
Chicago’s bullpen is the separator. It has allowed three earned runs in 23 innings over the last five days and five in 29 innings over the last seven. Houston’s bullpen has allowed 11 earned runs in 23 innings over the last five days and 17 in 29.1 over the last seven. Houston preserved its best relievers Tuesday, but Chicago still has the stronger recent relief profile if this becomes a bullpen game.
Hayden Wesneski is the strongest reason to back Houston. He allowed one earned run in five innings in his latest start, threw five scoreless innings before that, and the Astros are 5-1 in his six starts. Davis Martin is the obvious risk after allowing 13 earned runs across his last three starts, but two of those appearances ended after one and two innings because of a rain delay and an ejection. He returns with a 4.32 season ERA after reportedly throwing five scoreless rehabilitation innings.
Martin does not have to outpitch Wesneski for this wager to work; he needs to keep Chicago within reach of its bullpen. At -142, Houston is asking me to pay a substantial favorite’s price despite the worse record, run differential and current offensive form. The White Sox at +120 offer the better value.

2Hayden WesneskiOVER 1.5 Pitcher Walks Pitcher Walks-163
Not yet graded
Wesneski has issued at least two walks in five of his six starts, averaging 2.0 per outing despite generally working only five or six innings. Chicago's lineup walks in 11% of its plate appearances, and all nine hitters have established walk-rate numbers. That combination gives him little margin to stay under this number, even if he pitches well overall.
Chase MeidrothOVER 0.5 Hits Hits-148
Not yet graded
Meidroth has three hits in seven at-bats this series and is batting .316 over the last seven days. His .256 average against right-handed pitching is solid enough for this matchup, and batting seventh for the road team should still provide four trips in a competitive game. I prefer the hit prop to his identical total-bases line because one hit settles either market and this price is slightly better.
