Athletics at Rangers

It’s a getaway afternoon under the roof in Arlington, with Texas chasing a sweep and the Athletics trying to stop a five-game slide. The momentum belongs to the Rangers, but today’s starting-pitching matchup looks different from the first two games.

Jacob Lopez owns a 2.12 ERA with 21 strikeouts over his last three starts and has allowed no more than two earned runs in six consecutive starts. That run includes six innings of two-run baseball against Texas on August 16. The Rangers start seven right-handed hitters, but Lopez’s recent start logs show his success has held up against right-handed batters.

Cody Bradford has a legitimate 1.86 ERA through two home starts, but Oakland collected eight hits in four innings against him 17 days ago. Left-handed hitters have produced a .436 average and 1.067 OPS against Bradford, while Lawrence Butler is 6-for-10 with two homers in this matchup and carries a .983 OPS over his last 15 days.

If the game reaches the bullpens close, Texas has allowed 17 earned runs in 20⅓ relief innings over the last seven days. Oakland’s bullpen has posted a 3.86 ERA during that span, with Hogan Harris and Elvis Alvarado entering after five and four days off.

Texas’ 38-29 home record, Oakland’s 18-34 record against left-handed starters, and the Athletics’ five-game skid keep this from being a high-confidence play. But Lopez gives the underdog a credible starting edge, Oakland has already shown it can reach Bradford, and the bullpen conditions are competitive enough to take the full plus-money return rather than pay -160 for the extra run.
