The read
The Trop closes this series with two capable starters, two strong bullpens and no weather variable under the roof. Tampa Bay has won the first two games, but the sweep opportunity is not the foundation of this bet; Sunday’s pitching matchup is.
Drew Rasmussen is the separator. He enters with a 2.95 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 143 strikeouts against 25 walks in 140.1 innings. Robbie Ray has a 3.21 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 122 strikeouts against 70 walks in 143.0 innings. The contact numbers reinforce Rasmussen’s advantage: a 6.1% barrel rate and 33.9% hard-hit rate allowed, compared with Ray’s 8.6% and 37.6%.
Rasmussen has held right-handed hitters to a .512 OPS and left-handed hitters to .596. Ray has allowed a .717 OPS to right-handed hitters, and Tampa Bay’s confirmed lineup sends up six right-handed bats plus a switch-hitter. San Diego is also playing its first game after Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets were placed on the injured list today.
There are enough Padres strengths to keep me off Rays -1.5. Ray owns a 2.93 ERA over his last three starts, San Diego has a .708 OPS against right-handed pitching, and its current bullpen carries a 2.25 ERA. That makes the matchup support a Tampa Bay victory more clearly than a multi-run result.
I’m paying the -160 for Rasmussen’s superior command and contact profile, backed by a Rays bullpen with a 2.41 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. Rays moneyline is the ticket.

I’m backing Rasmussen to finish six innings. He has recorded at least 18 outs in four of his last six starts and was allowed a season-high 103 pitches last time out. His 0.93 WHIP and excellent results against both right- and left-handed hitters reduce the risk of an early hook.
San Diego is also playing its first game without Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets, while Kevin Kelly has worked both games of this series. That gives Tampa Bay an additional reason to seek length from Rasmussen. At plus money, 18 outs is the right threshold.
Robbie RayOVER 3.5 Strikeouts Strikeouts-148
WActual 4
Four strikeouts is a modest assignment for Ray, who has reached that mark in seven of his last eight starts. Tampa Bay is a contact-oriented club, but this lineup still gives him targets: Jonathan Aranda, Ryan Vilade, Jorge Mateo and Taylor Walls all carry meaningful strikeout rates.
Ray’s slider has a 34.9% whiff rate and his knuckle curve is at 36.5%. Those secondary pitches should give him enough swing-and-miss opportunities to clear this before the Padres need to turn the game over to their bullpen.
