The read

I’m backing San Francisco, and this is not a blind sweep play. Logan Webb is the separator: he carries a 3.75 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 141.2 innings, compared with Nick Lodolo’s 5.04 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 75.0 innings. Webb has a 3.42 ERA at home, while Lodolo has a 5.59 ERA on the road. Cincinnati also owns a .222 average and .684 OPS against right-handed pitching, and Webb has held both right- and left-handed hitters below a .650 OPS.

There are legitimate risks. San Francisco’s confirmed lineup is thinner than the group that produced most of the offense earlier in the series, and its bullpen has covered 18.0 innings over the last three games. That keeps this from being a high-confidence favorite play. Still, those relievers allowed only two earned runs during that workload, and Webb offers the best chance of either starter to keep today’s bullpen requirement manageable.

This sets up as a close, restrained game at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park. That is why I want the moneyline rather than a margin-dependent ticket. At -118, I’m asking the stronger starting-pitcher profile to produce an outright home win at a reasonable price.
