The read

I’m taking Pittsburgh at plus money. Randy Vásquez has been excellent lately—four earned runs across his last 18 innings—and that deserves respect. But his season-long matchup is vulnerable: left-handed hitters own a .305 average and .855 OPS against him, and Pittsburgh starts four left-handed hitters plus two switch-hitters. The Pirates have also produced a .259 average and .762 OPS against right-handed pitching, compared with San Diego’s .236 average and .709 OPS.

Bubba Chandler carries risk after allowing four earned runs in four innings against Los Angeles, but his underlying contact profile is cleaner than Vásquez’s. Chandler has allowed a 5.6% barrel rate and 38.3% hard-hit rate; Vásquez sits at 10.3% and 43.9%. At a pitcher-friendly park with a 0.92 factor, I’ll trust the starter who has limited damaging contact more consistently.

San Diego owns the better bullpen and defense, so this is no blind ride on Pittsburgh’s two wins in the series. The Padres’ current relievers have a 2.19 ERA against Pittsburgh’s 3.16, and their .988 fielding percentage is better than the Pirates’ .982. But the price compensates for those advantages, while the starting-pitcher platoon matchup points toward Pittsburgh. I want the upside of Pirates ML +122, not the expensive protection of +1.5 at -176.
