The read

I want the run here. New York is playing too well at Citi Field, and this matchup is too balanced, for me to lay -148 with Milwaukee. The Mets are 7-3 over their last 10 and 6-1 at home during that stretch; Milwaukee is 6-4 over its last 10 but has lost two straight. Those records do not decide tonight, but they establish that this is not a lifeless home underdog.

Robert Stock’s 5.40 ERA and 1.68 WHIP keep me from forcing the Mets moneyline, but his three home starts have produced a 1.32 ERA. Dustin May brings the deeper résumé and already threw six scoreless innings against New York this season, yet he has a 5.59 road ERA and surrendered seven earned runs in two innings last time out. New York also starts four left-handed hitters against a pitcher who has allowed them a .751 OPS, compared with .601 against righties.

Milwaukee’s bullpen is the reason I want the insurance. It owns a 0.88 ERA over the last seven games, compared with 3.24 for the Mets, giving the Brewers the cleaner late-game path. But Citi Field is pitcher-friendly, Tuesday’s opener required 10 innings to separate these clubs, and the season series is tied 2-2. My read calls for another competitive game. The extra run and a half lets New York cash the ticket with either an outright win or a one-run loss.
