Pirates at Dodgers

The late-afternoon sun is still high over Dodger Stadium, where Pittsburgh gets another crack at Los Angeles one night after a 10-inning walk-off. This time the matchup turns on Tarik Skubal against Jared Jones, and I’m laying the run and a half with the Dodgers at -114. Skubal brings a 2.85 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 135 strikeouts against 20 walks; Jones stands at 4.78, 1.20 and 72 against 21. Jones owns a 3.84 ERA outside his eight-run Mets start and just held Boston to one earned run over five innings, so this is not a bet built on dismissing him. Skubal is simply the more trustworthy starting point.

Tonight’s lineup construction sharpens that advantage. Pittsburgh starts six right-handed hitters and two switch-hitters against Skubal, who has held right-handed batters to a .190 average and .565 OPS. The Pirates have hit .244 with a .692 OPS against left-handed pitching. Los Angeles starts six left-handed hitters against Jones, who has allowed a .234 average and .761 OPS to that side, while the Dodgers have produced a .262 average and .772 OPS against right-handers. Oneil Cruz, the only left-handed starter for Pittsburgh, is a genuine counterweight after hitting two home runs in nine recent at-bats. Andy Pages’ fresh absence also makes Los Angeles thinner, with Alek Thomas carrying a .181 average and .563 OPS.

The late innings complete the case. The Dodgers’ current bullpen owns a 2.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, compared with Pittsburgh’s 3.40 and 1.15. The Pirates’ relief corps has not surrendered an earned run over its last three games, but six relievers worked Friday, Mason Montgomery has thrown 54 pitches across three appearances, and Gregory Soto and Luke Weaver worked two of the last three game days. Tanner Scott did not pitch Friday. Los Angeles also has the cleaner season-long defensive record, with 52 errors against Pittsburgh’s 82. I’m not paying the Dodgers’ -250 moneyline; with advantages in the starting matchup, lineup geometry, bullpen availability and defense, -1.5 at -114 is the ticket.
