White Sox at Cubs

Tuesday night under the lights at Wrigley, the wind is blowing out and these Chicago clubs are back after a 10-inning street fight. The Cubs won the opener, but tonight’s price asks me to treat the White Sox like a long shot. I don’t. The Cubs’ season offense has been better—5.2 runs per game with a .757 OPS versus 4.8 and .729—but the immediate form runs the other way. Over the last five games, the White Sox have averaged 6.6 runs to the Cubs’ 3.6. Across the last three, their .386 xwOBA and 40.2% hard-hit rate also lead Chicago’s .287 and 26.4%.

Kevin Gausman can absolutely ruin this ticket with his splitter, but his overall profile does not justify laying this kind of price against a lineup seeing the ball well. He carries a 4.53 ERA and 3.89 xERA, while Bryan Hudson sits at 3.14 and 3.15. Gausman has a 4.67 ERA across his last 17⅓ innings; Hudson has a 2.45 ERA over 3⅔ innings in his last three starts, although those abbreviated outings confirm he is only opening the game. The first inning is the pressure point: Gausman has a 7.43 ERA there, compared with Hudson’s 1.50. With the wind blowing 10 mph out to center, I want the lineup producing the better current contact at an underdog return.

The Cubs own the cleaner defense—46 errors and a .990 fielding percentage versus 68 and .985—and the bullpens are close: the White Sox are at a 3.48 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, while the Cubs are at 3.55 and 1.23. Those are legitimate Chicago advantages, which keeps this from being a reckless swing. But +156 is paying me to back a first-place club that is 13-7 over its last 20, exactly matching the Cubs over that span, and that showed last night it can answer after falling behind. My read has this game much closer than the moneyline. I’ll take the price and trust the White Sox to finish the upset.
