Angels at Astros

Under the closed roof at Daikin Park, George Klassen and the Angels open a three-game set against Cristian Javier and the division-leading Astros. Houston is the stronger club across the season, but tonight’s starting matchup makes Los Angeles the better ticket at this price.

Javier enters with a 6.68 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, and right-handed hitters have produced a .319 average and .995 OPS against him. That vulnerability matters with Mike Trout, Zach Neto, Vaughn Grissom and Denzer Guzman batting right-handed, plus switch-hitter Tyler Heineman. Javier’s four-seamer accounts for 51.4% of his pitches and carries a .398 expected wOBA. Klassen is hardly safe—his 15 walks in 14.2 innings make him volatile—but his August work has been better. He owns a 2.70 ERA across 10 innings this month, and his latest start produced six innings, two earned runs, five strikeouts and one walk.

The Angels’ offense makes this uncomfortable: they have scored 2.7 runs per game in August, compared with Houston’s 4.3. But the relief comparison gives Los Angeles a chance to finish the job if Klassen delivers competitive innings. The Angels’ bullpen owns a 3.53 season ERA and a 2.59 ERA over its last seven games; Houston’s is at 3.58 for the season and 4.02 over its last seven. Josh Hader remains a major Houston advantage, but I am not paying for the stronger team when its starter is this vulnerable. At +148, the Angels moneyline properly rewards the risk and captures their real path to winning outright.
