The read
Overcast skies, a breeze carrying toward right field, and a rubber match at Progressive Field with both clubs fighting for October ground. This feels like a tight Sunday game that will be decided after the starters leave.
I’m backing the deeper, hotter team at essentially even money. Casey Mize’s four-seamer has been his best weapon, and his splitter gives him a legitimate answer for Cleveland’s left-handed core. The Guardians can manufacture traffic, but the bottom half of this lineup has been light, and Mize should avoid the prolonged inning that beats him.
Tanner Bibee is vulnerable to the damaging swing, particularly against left-handed bats, and Jackson Merrill is seeing the ball too well for that weakness to ignore. San Diego also has the superior late-inning setup: if this is tied or the Padres lead after six, Morejon, Estrada and Miller give me the side I want. I’ll lay the nickel with San Diego rather than pay a steep price for Cleveland’s extra run.

2Brayan RocchioUNDER 1.5 H+R+RBI H+R+RBI-168
WActual 0
Rocchio has cleared this number only once in his last 15 games, and batting ninth limits both his plate appearances and his chances to score. He’ll also hit from the left side against Casey Mize, who has held left-handed hitters to a .207 average and .548 OPS. One single still cashes the under, which makes the price playable.
Jackson MerrillOVER 1.5 Total Bases Total Bases+120
LActual 1
Merrill has topped 1.5 total bases in 10 of his last 15 games, and the quality of contact supports the run: a 98.3 mph recent average exit velocity with four barrels on 20 balls in play. Tanner Bibee has allowed 17 homers to left-handed hitters, and the wind blowing toward right field gives Merrill another favorable ingredient at plus money.
