The read
Saturday night in Anaheim, the marine layer settling over the outfield and two last-place clubs playing loose. This has the feel of another game decided in the final three innings.
Reid Detmers is the better strikeout arm, but -153 is too much for an Angels team that has lost all six of his latest starts. Kansas City’s right-handed lineup fits this matchup, Salvador Perez is back at DH, and Jac Caglianone is seeing the ball too well for me to assume a lefty automatically cools him down.
Randy Dobnak’s low-whiff profile is dangerous, but his ground-ball approach plays behind the superior defense. Kansas City also owns the cleaner recent bullpen form and has already shown it can win the late matchup. These teams are too close for the Royals to be priced like a 41% proposition, so I’m taking the full plus-money swing.

I’m riding the hottest power bat on the board at a price that still offers value. Caglianone has five homers in his last 15 games, including one against a left-hander here last night, and his recent contact features a 95.4 mph average exit velocity with four barrels. Detmers has allowed 17 homers this season, while the mild wind blowing toward center gives well-struck contact a little help. The chase rate adds volatility, but +420 pays me to accept it.

Five complete innings still cashes this under, and Dobnak has recorded 16 outs only once in his five starts. He has needed at least 90 pitches in four of those outings, while his whiff rate has declined from 29% in his second start to 13% last time out. That leaves very little margin against an Angels lineup whose first three hitters have consistently reached base lately. Dobnak can survive contact with ground balls, but the combination of traffic, limited swing-and-miss stuff and a quick hook makes Under 15.5 outs my favorite angle.

I’m betting the quality of Caglianone’s contact, not simply chasing Friday’s box score. He has cleared this number in 10 of his last 15 games, producing four homers in the last seven with a 95.4 mph recent average exit velocity.
Detmers’ slider is the difficult part of this matchup, but his four-seamer remains vulnerable and accounts for nearly half his pitches. Caglianone also handled left-handed pitching Friday, taking one southpaw deep and collecting another RBI hit against a second.
At +145, one extra-base hit is enough, and the price properly compensates me for the matchup risk.
