The read
Tuesday night by the Bay, and the Giants are trying to stop the bleeding against a Houston club that just ripped their hearts out in extra innings. The problem is the man they're handing the ball to. Carson Whisenhunt is a young lefty who hasn't even made it through four innings in either of his last two starts, and right-handed hitters have been absolutely feasting on him — hitting well over three hundred and doing serious damage when they connect. Houston looked at that and stacked their lineup with seven righties, including Cam Smith, who's been red hot all week, launching homers and squaring up everything he touches. This isn't a matchup, it's an ambush.
And when Whisenhunt exits early — which is his pattern lately, not a guess — the game falls into the lap of a San Francisco bullpen running on fumes. That group has been bleeding runs all week, and three of their most-used arms pitched both of the last two nights. Houston's relievers, by contrast, have been nearly untouchable lately and come in rested. So the Astros don't just have the edge early in the game; they have it late too. On the other side, Houston's Hunter Brown has been dealing — piling up strikeouts while barely walking anybody — and he's especially tough on left-handed hitters, which is exactly what this Giants lineup is built around. San Francisco has barely been scoring lately, managing under three runs a game and even less than that over the past few days. Somebody has to drive in runs to keep this thing close, and I'm not sure who that is.
The honest case for the Giants is the ballpark and the flukiness of tight baseball games — their home park swallows fly balls, and these two teams just played nine innings of deadlock before Houston pulled away late. But look closer at how the Giants have stayed close lately: their starting pitchers have carried them, and tonight's starter is the one guy in the rotation who can't. When Whisenhunt has taken the ball recently, games haven't stayed tight — they've gotten away, fast. A hot lineup against a struggling arm, a rested bullpen against a gassed one, and a home offense that can't score: that's how a comfortable win gets built. Give me Houston to win it by a couple, even though it means they have to win by more than one run for the bet to cash.
