Ten at night at Dodger Stadium, cool air rolling in, and the best lefty in the game is making his first start on his new mound. Everyone in that building came to watch Tarik Skubal beat up on a team that's been losing all year. That's exactly why I'm taking the other side.
Think about what laying a run and a half at that price is really asking. You're paying a premium for a team to win by two or more, and even the true juggernauts — the ones you'd have to lay a fortune on — only manage that about half the time. Baseball doesn't care that one roster costs a fortune and the other is playing out the string. Games come down to one run. And the team being asked to blow this open has barely scored over the last week and a half: Betts hasn't gone deep in over two weeks, Muncy and Edman are barely getting hits, Freeman hasn't cleared a fence in two weeks either, and Tucker — who tripled and homered in the last two games — isn't even in the lineup tonight. You don't win by a run and a half with Ohtani and Andy Pages doing all the lifting.
Noah Cameron gets treated like an afterthought and he shouldn't be. He's given up almost nothing over sixteen innings this month, and lefty bats haven't given him trouble — which matters with four of them in the Los Angeles lineup. Skubal will do his damage for six innings, maybe a bit more, and Roberts has said flat out he's handling him carefully. Then the door swings open on a bullpen that lost Treinen to injury, released Jonathan Hernandez today, sent Hurt to the minors, and gives the ninth to an Edwin Diaz who's blown two saves in three days. Kansas City's own relievers are how this ticket goes up in smoke — Erceg and Lange can turn a one-run deficit into four fast, and I know it. But I'm not asking the Royals to win. I'm asking them to lose close, and I'm getting paid extra to ask.

Ten-ten at Chavez Ravine, marine layer settling in, and the best left-hander in baseball is making his first start on his new mound. Everybody in this building is here to watch Tarik Skubal put a hurting on a 49-70 ballclub. That's exactly why I'm on the other side of the number.
Understand what -1.5 at -130 is asking you to believe. It's asking you to lay real juice on a team winning by two or more, and even the true monsters — the ones you'd lay three hundred cents on the dollar for — only get there about half the time. Baseball doesn't care that one roster costs four hundred million and the other one is playing out the string. This is a one-run sport. And the club being asked to blow a game open has scored three and a half a night over its last ten, with Betts homerless in his last fifteen days, Muncy hitting .158, Edman at .174, Freeman without a ball over the fence in two weeks, and Tucker — the guy who tripled and homered in the two games before this — nowhere on tonight's card. You don't cover a run and a half with Ohtani and Andy Pages carrying nine spots by themselves.
