The read
Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s ballpark, the Mets are on a winning streak while the Pirates are trying to end a losing streak. I’m backing Pittsburgh to settle down at home.
Robert Stock has looked good in his only start, but he gave up more dangerous contact than the result suggests, including plenty of hard hits and far more balls in the air than on the ground. With warm weather and the wind blowing toward left field, Pittsburgh’s hitters have a chance to show that his strong start was misleading. Bubba Chandler has pitched better lately, and Pittsburgh has the better group of relief pitchers behind him. Carson Benge’s absence also takes one of New York’s hottest hitters out of the lineup. I’m taking the Pirates to win.
The full analysis
Saturday night at PNC Park, with the Mets riding four straight wins and the Pirates trying to stop a four-game slide. I’m backing Pittsburgh to steady itself at home.
Robert Stock’s 1.80 ERA comes from one five-inning start, and the underlying contact tells a less flattering story: a 5.23 xERA, a 42.9% hard-hit rate and two fly balls for nearly every grounder. With warm weather and the wind carrying toward left, Pittsburgh’s lineup has a chance to expose that small-sample shine.
Bubba Chandler has been sharper lately, allowing five earned runs across his past three starts, and Pittsburgh has the stronger bullpen behind him. Carson Benge’s fresh absence also removes one of New York’s hottest bats. At -119, I’m laying the short price with the Pirates on the moneyline.

3Brandon LoweOVER 1.5 H+R+RBI H+R+RBI-131
WActual 4
Lowe has cleared this in 10 of his last 15 games, but the matchup matters more than the streak. Robert Stock’s 1.80 ERA is covering a 5.23 xERA, elevated hard contact and a fly-ball-heavy profile. Lowe owns a .923 OPS over the past 15 days, is hitting the ball with authority and gets the platoon advantage from the second spot. One extra-base hit can do most of the work here, and Pittsburgh should give him multiple chances to contribute.
Marcus SemienOVER 0.5 Walks Walks+170
Not yet graded
I don’t need Semien to catch up with Bubba Chandler’s velocity; I need him to make Chandler throw strikes. Chandler has issued 61 walks in 110.1 innings and has gone over 1.5 walks in six of his last eight starts. Semien has walked in six of his last 15 games while chasing just 12% of pitches recently. The seventh lineup spot costs him some plate-appearance equity, but +170 is enough compensation for a disciplined hitter facing a power arm with persistent control trouble.
Bryan ReynoldsOVER 0.5 Home Runs Home Runs+750
LActual 0
Reynolds is driving the ball better than his recent home-run total suggests, with a 92.3 mph average exit velocity, 10 hard-hit balls and two barrels over his latest 18 balls in play. He also bats third, giving him the best chance in Pittsburgh’s lineup to get four or five trips.
Robert Stock’s debut ERA masks a 5.23 xERA, a 42.9% hard-hit rate and a fly-ball-heavy profile. The warm night and wind carrying toward left add a little more upside. PNC Park keeps this from being a short-priced play, but +750 is enough compensation to take Reynolds against a starter whose contact has been much louder than his results.
