The read

Friday night at Oracle Park, with the marine air settling in, I’m backing Detroit to keep its strong road trip going and beat San Francisco.

I trust Keider Montero to give the Tigers the steadier start. He has pitched well lately and has handled hitters from both sides of the plate. San Francisco is using JT Brubaker briefly on short rest before turning things over to the bullpen, and that is a tough setup against a Detroit lineup that has been scoring runs in bunches.

Oracle Park could take away some of Detroit’s power, but the Tigers are getting production throughout the lineup. The Giants have been struggling and were held scoreless in their last game. San Francisco is rested and Detroit played yesterday, but I still prefer the Tigers because of the starting pitching and the way their offense is playing.

The full analysis

Keider Montero gives Detroit the more dependable path through the early innings. He owns a 3.17 ERA, has allowed five earned runs across his last three starts, and has held both left- and right-handed hitters in check. San Francisco counters with JT Brubaker as an opener on two days’ rest, forcing a Giants bullpen game against a Tigers lineup that has scored at least eight runs in six of its last eight.

Oracle Park can mute some of Detroit’s power, but this lineup is producing from top to bottom, while the Giants have lost five of six and were shut out Wednesday. The Giants had Thursday off and Detroit played yesterday, yet the gap in starting pitching and current offensive form still points my way. Gary’s Take: Tigers ML -136.
