It's Wrigley in early August, a little after one o'clock, and the Cubs can finish off a sweep. The Dodgers have dropped five in a row, lost by four last night while the crowd spent the whole game chanting at their new ace, and now they've got the last game before flying out to Arizona. Chicago's been playing good ball lately, and the ballpark can feel it.
What I like here is the Cubs' starter and who he's facing. Shota Imanaga has barely given up a run over his last few outings, and his splitter is the best pitch anybody's throwing today — he goes to it constantly, hitters swing through it a ton, and when they do make contact it doesn't hurt him. The Dodgers are running out six lefty or switch-hitting bats: Ohtani, Freeman, Edman, Tucker, Muncy, Feduccia. Imanaga has made left-handed hitters look bad all year. That's not a small edge, that's the whole ballgame.
Eric Lauer is the lesser arm and exactly the wrong guy for this ballpark. Hitters square him up hard, he lives up in the air instead of on the ground, and right-handed hitters have already taken him deep sixteen times — and Chicago is sending six righties at him with Suzuki, Hoerner and Crow-Armstrong all locked in. Behind him is a bullpen that burned four arms yesterday and watched Vesia and Díaz cough up runs in both games of this series, while the Cubs' relievers are fresh and haven't been leaned on hard. Los Angeles has lost five straight, got beat by four last night in front of a crowd that spent nine innings serenading their new ace, and now they get the getaway game before a flight to the desert. Chicago has won six of ten and the ballpark knows it.
The reason I'm on the Cubs is the lefty on the mound and the lineup card he's staring at. Shota Imanaga has allowed two earned runs across his last 19 2/3 innings, and his splitter — a third of everything he throws, a 39 percent whiff rate, hitters managing a .252 expected mark against it — is the single best pitch that will be thrown in this game. The Dodgers are answering with six left-handed or switch bats: Ohtani, Freeman, Edman, Tucker, Muncy, Feduccia. Imanaga has held left-handed hitters to .203 with a .704 OPS this season. That's not a small tilt, that's the whole game.
