Clear night by the lake, evening first pitch in Cleveland, two lefties starting, and two teams heading in opposite directions. Cleveland was a solid favorite this morning and now they're barely favored at all — that whole drop is because Jose Ramirez got scratched with a sore left hand. I'll happily take the cheaper price. Losing him hurts, I'm not going to pretend otherwise, but this team has already played a chunk of games without him this season and come out right at .500. That's not worth the size of the price cut we just got. That's a big name coming off the lineup card and the market panicking about the name.
What's replacing him is the part the price hasn't caught up to yet. Jo Adell is batting second and Rhys Hoskins is batting fourth — both here because the front office went shopping last week while New York was busy selling off pieces. Steven Kwan has been scorching hot for two weeks and isn't chasing bad pitches. Travis Bazzana is hitting the ball hard and squaring it up. Cantillo gets that group behind him, at home, against a Mets lineup that's barely scored the last two weeks and just got blanked in Miami. Bichette is ice cold and swinging at everything out of the zone. Robert is worse. Lindor is the only hitter over there I'd genuinely lose sleep over tonight, and one hitter doesn't beat you by himself.
The bigger thing is what New York has left once the starter comes out. Holmes, Weaver, Raley, Taylor, Rortvedt, Peralta — all traded away. Perez is hurt. Behind Manaea now it's Curry, Lavender and Yan, arms just called up this week to soak up innings for a team buried in the standings with nothing left to play for. Cleveland is still within shouting distance in their division and playing like it matters. I'm not ignoring the risk: they've lost seven of their last ten and Vogt has been fielding questions about his own bullpen all month, which is exactly why I'm not laying the extra run and a half just to shave the price. Straight moneyline on the Guardians — and I'd have taken it at this morning's more expensive number too.

Cleveland opened at -150 this morning and sits at -128 now — that whole move is Jose Ramirez, scratched with soreness in his left hand. I'll take the discount. Losing him matters, nobody's pretending otherwise, but this team has played thirty games without him this season and gone 15-15. That's not twenty-two cents of damage. That's a name coming off the card and a market overcorrecting to the name.
The bigger read is what New York has left after the seventh. Holmes, Weaver, Raley, Taylor, Rortvedt, Peralta — all shipped out. Perez is on the IL. What's behind Manaea now is Curry, Lavender, Yan, arms called up this week to eat innings for a team 20½ back with nothing to play for. Cleveland is three games out of the division and playing like it matters.
