The read
The roof's closed in Arlington, so the heat outside doesn't matter. What does matter is that Texas walks out having lost six in a row — their worst stretch of the year, a manager who said last night was the ugliest they've played, and a home ballpark that's barely seen them score at all during it. San Francisco shows up off a big win and a wild day and a half for the franchise. That's the story everybody sees, and it's why this price has crept down a little in the Giants' favor. The losing streak is setting the number. It shouldn't be.
Look at who San Francisco is actually putting in the batter's box. Six major leaguers were traded away Monday. Arraez is a Phillie, Ramos is a Yankee, Eldridge is hurt with a bruised thumb, Chapman's been out a month. What's left is Jung Hoo Lee, who's swinging great right now, a hot Susac, Basabe coming off a couple of homers, and then a bottom of the order — Kennedy, Leonard, McCray, Koss — that was in the minors a week ago. And the one hitter you'd actually worry about, Devers, has been lost against lefties all year and is walking into a lefty starter. MacKenzie Gore had a rough July and he's giving up too many home runs, but he still misses plenty of bats, and this is the weakest lineup he'll see the rest of the summer.
The other side matters just as much. Blade Tidwell was in the minors on Sunday, leans hard on one breaking pitch, and Texas stacked five lefty bats against him — Pederson, Seager, Nimmo, Carter, Lopez. Whatever he gives them won't last long, and the bullpen behind him just traded away its closer and one of its best setup guys two days ago, with Hentges and Winn already used on back-to-back nights. That's a lot of innings to cover with leftover arms on the sixth game of a seven-game trip. The risk is real: this Texas offense hasn't been scoring, so if Gore gets hit early, it's over quickly. That's why it's not a max bet. But I like the side, and the losing streak is buying me a better price.

The full analysis
Roof's shut in Arlington, 96 and irrelevant outside, and the home team walks out under it having lost six straight — the worst stretch of their season, a manager who called last night's game the worst they've played all year, and a ballpark that's watched them score nine runs total across five losses. Meanwhile the Giants come in off a 5-1 win and a franchise-altering 24 hours. That's the picture the market is looking at, and it's why a number that opened at -194 is sitting at -187. The streak is doing the pricing. It shouldn't be.
The other half matters just as much. Blade Tidwell was in Triple-A on Sunday, throws a sweeper on 40 percent of his pitches, and Texas answered with five left-handed bats in the order — Pederson, Seager, Nimmo, Carter, Lopez. Whatever he gives them, it's coming on a short leash, and behind him is a bullpen that shipped its closer and one of its best setup arms out of town 48 hours ago and has already run Hentges and Winn on back-to-back days. That's a lot of innings to cover with committee arms on the sixth game of a seven-game road trip. The risk is honest: a Rangers offense averaging 2.4 runs over five games doesn't come from behind, so if Gore gets dented early this one's over. That keeps it from being a hammer. But the side is right, and the streak is paying for my number.

Gore's stuff is fine — he's missing bats — but he hasn't finished six innings in five of his last six starts. The trouble hasn't been walks, it's been hard contact piling up pitch counts; he's allowed two homers in four of those outings. That's a guy getting into traffic and coming out in the fifth, not the sixth. Nothing about tonight's matchup changes that pattern for me, and Texas's bullpen has been getting steady work, so I don't expect the club to push him past his recent line just because they need length.

Pederson has feasted on right-handed pitching for years, and tonight he gets a righty making his first real look at a big league lineup. He's got four homers in his last two weeks and he's leading off, so he's guaranteed his at-bats. Plus money on total bases for a hitter with this kind of platoon history against this matchup is the number I want.
