The wind at Wrigley is blowing straight in from the outfield this afternoon — hard, and gusting harder — and these two teams have already played a couple of games where neither starter gave up much of anything. Gerrit Cole against Colin Rea looks like the easiest call on the board. That's exactly why I want to look twice at the price.
Cole is the better pitcher, no argument from me. But look at what the Yankees have turned into: they're barely scoring, hitting for a low average as a team over the last two weeks, and just about every run they've scored in this series came on a home run — Rosario's monster shot Friday, Spencer Jones twice. Judge, Stanton and Bellinger have been out long enough that the betting market has already accounted for it. The wind hasn't been accounted for. A stiff breeze blowing in takes away the one thing this offense can still do and forces them to string singles together behind Grisham, McMahon, Caballero and Wells — none of whom have hit much of anything in two weeks. Cole gives up a lot of fly balls, so the wind helps him too. It just hurts the side that has to score for him a lot more.
Rea is a different guy at home than on the road — much better at Wrigley, much worse everywhere else — and today his fastball gets to float up in the zone without getting punished for it. Behind him, the Cubs have been scoring in bunches over the last two weeks, with Hoerner red-hot, Bregman swinging it well, and Crow-Armstrong coming through with runners on. That's a lineup that scores in the gaps and on the ground, which is the only way anybody scores today. New York is on the tenth day of a road trip, playing an afternoon game after a night game, coming off a bullpen that blew the seventh and cut Doval loose yesterday. This one gets decided late by whoever has fresher arms, and that's Chicago. The Cubs were a nice underdog price this morning and the money has pushed it toward a coin flip since — I'll take them at plus money while it's still there.

The flags at Wrigley are pointing back at home plate this afternoon — twenty off the lake, gusting near thirty — and these two have already handed us two games where the starters barely gave up a thing. Gerrit Cole against Colin Rea looks like the easiest call on the board. That's exactly why the price is worth a second look.
Cole is the better pitcher and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But look at what this Yankee lineup has become: 3.4 runs a game over the last two weeks, .233 as a team, and nearly everything they've scored in this series came off the bat and over the wall — Rosario's 450-footer Friday, Spencer Jones twice. Judge, Stanton and Bellinger have been gone long enough that the market has already paid for it. The wind hasn't been paid for. A twenty-mile-an-hour blow-in takes away the one thing this offense still does and asks it to string singles behind Grisham, McMahon, Caballero and Wells, none of whom have hit .200 in a fortnight. Cole is the extreme fly-ball arm in this game, so the wind works for him too — it just does more damage to the side that has to score for him.
Rea is a homebody — 3.33 at Wrigley, 5.93 everywhere else — and this is the afternoon his four-seam gets to live in the air without paying full freight for it. Behind him the Cubs are at 5.9 runs a game over two weeks, Hoerner hitting .404 across fifteen days, Bregman .321, Crow-Armstrong at .361 with men in scoring position; that's a lineup that scores in the gaps and on the ground, which is the only way anybody scores today. New York is on game ten of a road trip, day game after a night game, coming off a pen that coughed up the seventh and shipped Doval out the door yesterday. This one gets decided in the seventh and eighth by whoever has more arms left, and that's Chicago. The board had them plus 112 this morning and it's been bet to a coin flip since — I'll take the Cubs at plus money while it's still there.
