Sunday afternoon game in Tampa, first pitch a little before two, and these two first-place teams have spent two days showing me exactly who they are. Friday the White Sox hit a bunch of home runs and won easily. Saturday the Rays' starter was untouchable, the closer slammed the door for another save, and Chicago never scored. Now it's the deciding game, both teams have travel on their minds, and Tampa flies to Denver tonight. Here's what really settles this one: neither starting pitcher is going to be anywhere near the finish. Kay hasn't gotten past the fifth inning in over a month of starts, and Jax averages about five innings every time out. This is a bullpen game with an early start time.
Kay is a lefty, and Tampa's lineup is full of exactly the kind of hitters who've been hurting him all year. Righties have crushed him; lefties have barely touched him. Tampa is running out six right-handed bats, and the best of them are built to beat left-handers — Caminero has done real damage against them, most of Vilade's homers have come off lefties, and Diaz is even better in day games. Flip it around and Chicago sends five left-handed hitters up against a righty in the afternoon, and most of that group has been pretty ordinary. They burned one reliever for a long outing yesterday, another Thursday, one more has thrown two days in a row, and they called someone up this morning just to have a warm body. Tampa counters with a closer who's been nearly perfect, a setup man who barely lets anyone reach base, two more solid arms behind them, and nobody who pitched yesterday. They've shut teams out four times in their last seven. Being fair about it: Tampa's bats have been quiet lately, one of their guys is in a two-week slump, and the price here isn't cheap. But Chicago's number moved toward the favorite this morning while Tampa's never budged. When money comes in on one side and the favorite's price doesn't move, I'll take the side that stood still.

Rubber game, getaway day, Tampa's on a plane to Denver tonight. Here's what actually decides it: neither man on the mound will be around for the ending. Anthony Kay's last six outings read 5.1, 5.0, 4.0, 5.1, 4.0, 3.2. Griffin Jax has 86 innings across 17 starts — five and change, every time out. This is a bullpen game with a one o'clock start time.

Tampa answers with Baker at a 1.45 and twenty straight save opportunities converted, Kelly at a 0.83 WHIP, Cleavinger and Booser underneath, and not one arm that's pitched consecutive days. Four shutouts in their last seven. The honest counterweight: Tampa has scored one, one, three and three lately, Aranda's hitting .208 over two weeks, and -150 is not a gift price. But Chicago shortened from +140 to +124 this morning while the Rays never budged off -150. When the favorite's number sits still while the other side gets bet, I'll stand on the number.
