Saturday night in Baltimore, hot out, and the wind is pushing toward left field. The Orioles get a shot at a team that's already flat on its back. Philly has dropped four in a row and eight of their last ten. Last night they gave their bullpen a two-run lead in the seventh and Gunnar Henderson erased it with one swing. The betting line opened with the Phillies as a modest favorite this morning and money has pushed them up since. That's the market piling onto a club that hasn't won a game in a week.
Here's what I keep coming back to: who's actually in the batter's box. Cristopher Sánchez has been very good this year, but almost all of it comes from wiping out lefty hitters — they can barely touch him and have taken him deep just once all season. Righties, though, hit him hard and have gone deep on him eleven times. Baltimore is starting six right-handed bats — Mayo, Ward, Alonso, O'Neill, Encarnacion-Strand and Rogers — and burying their only two lefties, the guys Sánchez actually handles, at third and eighth. Alonso has crushed exactly the pitches Sánchez throws, and Sánchez doesn't have much else to go to. The other way around, Shane Baz leans on a nasty curveball a third of the time and gets hitters flailing at it well outside the zone, and Philly is trotting out a bunch of lefties who've been chasing everything for two weeks. Harper, Marsh and Crawford have all been guilty of it, and Marsh has barely gotten a hit in the last two weeks.
Then there's the seventh inning, where this Phillies team keeps falling apart. Kerkering can't find the plate and needed a small mountain of pitches just to get two outs last night. Alvarado has been getting lit up. Duran is legitimately great, but somebody has to hand him a lead first, and Philadelphia failed to do that ten separate times in July. Baltimore's relievers have been quietly outstanding — Wells and Garcia have thrown a ton of innings with very few runs allowed — and their arms barely worked last night, ten and seventeen pitches. The price got worse for the home team today while the matchup on the field got better for them. I'll take the Orioles.

Extra bases feel like the floor tonight, not the ceiling, at this price.
