The read
Saturday night on the lake, and the price already told you everything. Cleveland opened as a modest favorite this morning and by now they're a much heavier one — that whole move came from one name on a lineup card. Kohl Drake is a rookie lefty who's barely pitched in the majors and hasn't pitched well when he has; Parker Messick has been Cleveland's most reliable starter all summer. The market saw those two names and moved like the game was already over.
What it didn't account for is that Cleveland can't hit right now. They've barely scored over the last two weeks and have been blanked three times in their last ten. Look at how tonight's lineup sets up: Angel Martinez is hitting fifth and hasn't had a hit in a long while, David Fry behind him is in the same drought, and the bottom two spots — Hedges and Rocchio — have both been close to automatic outs the last couple weeks. That's the back half of the order giving away at-bats. Arizona's won seven of ten and has been scoring nearly twice as much over that same stretch, and it's not just their best guys — Vargas, Waldschmidt and McCann at the bottom are all hitting, and Moreno seems to reach base every time up.
There's also a matchup here the price ignores. Drake's changeup is the one pitch he actually puts hitters away with — guys chase it constantly and swing through it a ton — and Cleveland's three most dangerous bats all happen to struggle badly against that exact pitch. Ramirez, DeLauter and Bazzana have all been weak against changeups, and the underlying numbers back it up. Drake didn't throw it much in his first two starts, but against this lineup he ought to go to it early, and I think he will. Arizona won the opener, they've got the healthier bats, the ballpark doesn't juice offense, and I'm getting paid a plus price to back the team that's been the better one every single day for two weeks.
The full analysis
What it didn't reprice is the Cleveland lineup. This team has scored 3.4 runs a game over the last two weeks and been shut out three times in the last ten. Look at how tonight's card actually sets up: Angel Martinez hitting fifth is hitless in his last eighteen at-bats, David Fry behind him is hitless in fourteen, and the eight-nine holes are Hedges at .176 and Rocchio at .190 over the last fifteen days. That's the back half of the order handing out outs. Arizona comes in 7-3, scoring 5.8 a game over that same two-week stretch, and it isn't just the top — Vargas at .400, Waldschmidt at .406 and McCann at .529 down at the bottom are all producing, and Moreno has been on base seemingly every trip through.
There's also a shape to Drake's night the price ignores. The changeup is the one pitch he actually finishes hitters with — a 66.7 percent chase rate and a 41.7 percent whiff — and Cleveland's three most dangerous bats happen to be at their worst against exactly that pitch. Ramirez is hitting .196 against changeups, DeLauter .171, Bazzana .222, with expected numbers underneath that back it up. Drake threw it 16.8 percent of the time in his first two starts; against this particular nine, he ought to find it early, and I think he does. Arizona took the opener, they've got the healthier bats in a park that doesn't inflate anything, and I'm being paid plus money to back the team that's been better than Cleveland every day for two weeks.
