The read
PNC Park gets another July game that feels like the playoffs. After Monday night’s walk-off, Pittsburgh can lock up the season tiebreaker. Both teams have the same record, and with the trade deadline just days away, I care more about tonight’s matchup than momentum.
I give Bubba Chandler the edge among the starting pitchers. He has pitched better than his results suggest, his fastball and slider are hard to hit, and he just kept the Yankees scoreless for more than six innings. Arizona’s left-handed hitters are a threat, but Brandon Pfaadt has had real trouble with lefties. Pittsburgh can go after him with Brandon Lowe, Ryan O’Hearn, Jacob Gonzalez, its hitters who bat from either side, and a cleared Esmerlyn Valdez.
I also trust Pittsburgh more late in the game. Mason Montgomery probably needs the night off, but Gregory Soto is available. Arizona has fewer dependable relief options after Jonathan Loáisiga pitched on back-to-back days, and its closer role is less settled. Chandler could be pulled early if he struggles, so I’m not betting heavily, but with the odds close to even, I’m taking the Pirates to win.

PNC Park gets another game with October weight in July, and Pittsburgh can clinch the season tiebreaker after Monday night’s walk-off. With both clubs 55-52 and the deadline three days away, this is less about momentum than which side is better built for tonight’s specific matchup.
I give Bubba Chandler the starting-pitching edge. His 4.01 xERA is better than his 4.47 ERA, his 98.6 mph four-seamer and 90.3 mph slider both miss bats, and he just held the Yankees scoreless for 6 1/3 innings. Arizona’s left-handed bats are the danger, but Brandon Pfaadt presents the more direct weakness: lefties own an .856 OPS against him, and Pittsburgh can attack him with Brandon Lowe, Ryan O’Hearn, Jacob Gonzalez and its switch-hitters ahead of a cleared Esmerlyn Valdez.
The late innings also lean Pittsburgh. Mason Montgomery likely needs a night off, but Gregory Soto remains available; Arizona is thinner in leverage after Jonathan Loáisiga worked on consecutive days, and its closer situation is less secure. Chandler’s occasional short leash keeps this from being a heavy play, but at a near pick’em price I make the home side the right favorite. My bet is Pirates moneyline -115.
