The read

Max Scherzer returns to Nationals Park on his birthday, but I’m not buying into the nostalgia. Washington has the hotter lineup entering the opener, while Toronto has lost several straight series.

Scherzer has been out of the majors for weeks, is not ready for a full workload and has been hit hard, especially for home runs. Washington can load its lineup with left-handed hitters, who have had plenty of success against him. James Wood and CJ Abrams also handle his main fastball well, and the Nationals have been scoring runs in bunches lately.

Washington’s tired relief pitchers and planned pitching setup keep me from betting on a win by two or more. But Toronto’s offense has struggled lately and has not been consistent enough to match Washington’s clear edge at the plate. I’m backing the Nationals to win as a modest favorite.

The full analysis

Scherzer has not pitched in the majors since June 10, is not fully stretched out and owns a 10.23 ERA with nine home runs allowed in 22 innings. Washington can send eight hitters to the plate from the left side, a major concern against a pitcher who has allowed lefties a .322 average and 1.067 OPS. James Wood and CJ Abrams are especially dangerous against four-seam fastballs, and Washington has averaged 7.1 runs over its last 10 games.

The Nationals’ tired bullpen and opener-bulk arrangement keep me away from laying 1.5 runs. But Toronto has averaged only 2.4 runs over its last 10, and its lineup has not shown enough consistency to offset Washington’s substantial offensive advantage. I’ll back the Nationals to win at -125.
