The read
Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park, Detroit goes for its third straight win in this series with Casey Mize facing Michael Wacha. I’m backing the Tigers to win outright, but I’m not asking them to win by more than one because the first two games were tight.
The starting pitching matchup is the main reason for my bet. Mize has pitched better than Wacha both in actual results and in the quality of contact he has allowed. Mize has also been stronger at home and during the day, while Wacha has struggled more on the road and in daytime games. Most of Kansas City’s lineup will hit left-handed against Mize, and he has handled left-handed hitters well. Bobby Witt Junior is also newly injured, taking away a hitter who had done plenty of damage against Mize, including a pair of home runs.
Detroit has played well at home, while Kansas City has struggled badly on the road. The Tigers have also made much better contact over their past few games. Detroit’s late-game pitching is in workable shape too: Kyle Finnegan and Tyler Holton rested Friday, and Kenley Jansen barely had to work. Since Detroit won each of the first two games by only one run, I’m simply trusting Mize’s matchup and asking the Tigers to win.
The full analysis
The starting matchup is the center of this bet. Mize has a 2.79 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 3.14 xERA, while Wacha enters with a 3.66 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 4.16 xERA. The setting strengthens Detroit’s advantage: Mize has a 2.50 home ERA and 2.45 day ERA, compared with Wacha’s 4.23 road ERA and 5.04 day ERA. Kansas City’s lineup has six of nine starters hitting from the left side against a right-hander, and Mize has limited left-handed hitters to a .192 average and .511 OPS. Bobby Witt Jr. is also newly on the injured list, removing the hitter who was 7-for-17 with two home runs against Mize.
Detroit is 29-23 at home, while Kansas City is 17-35 on the road. The Tigers have also produced a .435 xwOBA and 44.1% hard-hit rate over their last three games, compared with a .286 xwOBA and 33.8% hard-hit rate for the Royals. The late-game setup remains workable for Detroit: Kyle Finnegan and Tyler Holton did not pitch Friday, and Kenley Jansen required only eight pitches. I’m not laying the run line after Detroit won the first two games of this series 4-3 and 2-1. The moneyline is the ticket that matches the read: trust Mize’s matchup and make Detroit prove only that it can win.
