Friday night at Comerica Park, Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit while Beck Way makes his first start of the year for Kansas City. Detroit has the better starting pitcher, but I’m betting the Royals to win or lose by only one run instead of paying a steep price on the Tigers to win. Detroit has beaten Kansas City every time they have met here this season, but each game was decided by one run. That does not guarantee anything tonight, but it shows why getting that extra run matters.
Skubal is the biggest threat to my bet, but Kansas City’s offense has been just as productive as Detroit’s this season. Skubal has also been more vulnerable against left-handed hitters, and the Royals have several productive bats from that side. Carter Jensen, Vinnie Pasquantino, Isaac Collins and Michael Massey have all been hitting well lately. I do not need them to overpower Skubal, only to keep Kansas City close.
Way has had trouble with left-handed hitters, but he has been very effective against right-handed bats. Detroit has several of those, including Gleyber Torres, Dillon Dingler, Spencer Torkelson, Hao-Yu Lee, Matt Vierling and Ben Malgeri. Comerica Park tends to hold down scoring, and the wind blowing in from center field could help keep the game tight. Kansas City’s tired relief pitchers are the main concern, especially with John Schreiber and Steven Cruz working on back-to-back days, but the matchup and conditions make the extra run worth taking. I’m backing the Royals to keep it within one.

Skubal’s 2.83 ERA and 0.93 WHIP make him the biggest threat to this bet, but Kansas City’s season-long offensive profile is competitive with Detroit’s. The Royals are batting .248 with a .715 OPS and 4.2 runs per game; the Tigers are at .235, .712 and 4.2. Skubal has allowed left-handed hitters a .286 average and .759 OPS, and Kansas City brings several productive bats from that side. Over the last seven days, Carter Jensen has a .946 OPS, Vinnie Pasquantino is at .842, Isaac Collins is at .838 and Michael Massey is at .903. I’m not asking that group to dominate Skubal—only to keep Kansas City attached.
Way’s vulnerability to left-handed hitters is concerning, but right-handed opponents have managed a .174 average and .479 OPS against him over 46 at-bats. Gleyber Torres, Dillon Dingler, Spencer Torkelson, Hao-Yu Lee, Matt Vierling and Ben Malgeri all bat right-handed for Detroit. Comerica Park’s 0.95 park factor and the eight-mph wind blowing in from center field also support a more compressed game. Kansas City’s bullpen workload is the danger, particularly with John Schreiber and Steven Cruz having pitched on consecutive days, but the matchup and environment give the extra run enough value. Royals +1.5 is the sharper way to play it.
