The read
Friday night in Washington brings two strong lineups into warm weather with the wind helping balls hit toward left field. Arizona has won three in a row, while Washington comes home after a shutout win, so both teams should feel confident.
The starting pitching matchup is closer than the surface results suggest. Eduardo Rodriguez has pitched well overall, but there are warning signs that he has been fortunate. Carson Palmquist has struggled badly, even though his underlying performance suggests he has deserved better. Still, he has not pitched deep into recent games and has allowed too many runners. I do not trust him against an Arizona lineup that has been scoring heavily. Washington has also hit well lately, but Arizona has the better overall pitching, limits runners more effectively and plays much cleaner defense.
Washington still has a real chance because Rodriguez was hit hard in his last start and could struggle again. The Nationals are also rested, while Arizona played the previous day. That is why I am taking the Diamondbacks simply to win instead of asking them to win by multiple runs. I expect Arizona’s lineup to pressure Palmquist and Washington’s pitchers, while Rodriguez, the better defense and stronger pitching give Arizona more ways to close it out.
The full analysis
Friday night at Nationals Park brings two productive lineups into warm conditions with the wind blowing out to left. Arizona has won three straight, while Washington returns home after an 8-0 victory, so neither side arrives short on confidence.
The starting-pitcher comparison is not as simple as Eduardo Rodriguez’s 2.62 ERA against Carson Palmquist’s 8.74. Rodriguez carries a serious 5.11 xERA warning, while Palmquist’s 4.11 xERA suggests his early results have been unusually harsh. Still, Palmquist has thrown only 11.1 innings, owns a 1.68 WHIP and lasted 1.0, 3.0 and 1.2 innings in his last three outings. That is too little stability for me against an Arizona offense averaging 8.2 runs over its last five games. Washington has averaged 5.6 over the same span, but Arizona has the stronger full-game support structure: a 4.23 team ERA and 1.29 WHIP compared with Washington’s 4.79 and 1.40, plus only 37 defensive errors against Washington’s 80. Those quieter edges matter when both offenses are capable of creating traffic.
Washington’s path is legitimate. Rodriguez allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings last time out, and his expected numbers say another difficult night is possible. The Nationals also had Thursday off, whereas Arizona played yesterday. That uncertainty is exactly why I want the moneyline rather than asking the Diamondbacks to clear 1.5 runs. My read is that Arizona’s lineup puts Palmquist and the Washington pitching staff under sustained pressure, while Rodriguez, the cleaner defense and the better overall pitching numbers give the Diamondbacks more ways to finish the job. At -124, I am backing Arizona simply to win.

WActual 3
The Gary Special: Stacking Moreno's combined Hits + Runs + RBIs over 1.5 aligns directly with our read on his single-hit prop and Arizona's team run environment. Moreno sits squarely in the 4-spot of a Diamondbacks lineup averaging 8.2 runs per game over their last 5 games.
In his last 10 games alone, Moreno has eclipsed 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs in 6 separate contests, including yesterday's 3-for-4 line (1 double, 2 RBIs, 1 run). Facing Palmquist (.360 opp AVG to RHB) followed by a thin Washington bullpen yielding a 5.09 ERA, Moreno is positioned to drive in runners like Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll while scoring himself via Nolan Arenado behind him.
Both Moreno props point in the same direction because his individual contact quality directly drives Arizona's scoring output in this pristine matchup. Specific risk: Arizona stranding runners ahead of Moreno or a low-scoring pitcher's duel developing.
