The Braves and Padres open up their series at Truist Park on a hot summer evening where the wind is blowing in but the bats are ready to do some damage. Atlanta comes into this game as a solid home favorite for good reason, holding a strong 58-41 overall record and a dominant 30-19 mark at home, while San Diego sits at 49-51 overall and just 22-27 on the road. This starting pitching matchup heavily favors the Braves. Walker Buehler is starting for San Diego and is enduring a nightmare season, carrying a 5-5 record, a 5.36 ERA, and a 1.44 WHIP, which includes a hideous 9.14 ERA over his last five starts (22 earned runs in 21.2 innings) and a 6.50 road ERA. His 94 mph four-seam fastball is a major liability, allowing a .423 expected wOBA and .393 batting average, setting up beautifully for Atlanta's top lefties like Matt Olson (.923 OPS against righties, .554 slugging against four-seamers) and Michael Harris II (.857 OPS against righties, .515 slugging against four-seamers). The warm 87°F temperature at Truist Park will carry the baseball, but a solid 10-14 mph wind blowing in from center field acts as a critical stabilizer. This breeze directly plays into López's hands by neutralizing his fly-ball-heavy profile (0.83 GO/AO ratio). And while the Padres hold a late-inning advantage with a fresh closer in Mason Miller (0.89 ERA, 25 saves, 0.84 WHIP, 16.6 K/9) compared to Atlanta's Raisel Iglesias (2.36 ERA, 19 saves, 1.05 WHIP, 10.0 K/9), San Diego is highly unlikely to have a lead to protect. Both squads are missing their premier high-leverage setup options—Robert Suarez for Atlanta, and Jason Adam and Jeremiah Estrada for San Diego—but the Braves' superior lineup and home-field strength will be too much for Buehler to survive. Michael Harris II is in a prime position to exploit Walker Buehler's current lack of command and failure to miss bats. Harris is a high-contact hitter (.301 AVG) who has been exceptionally consistent recently, recording multi-hit performances in three of his last four games.
He faces a right-hander in Buehler who is in a massive statistical freefall, surrendering 29 hits and 22 runs over his last 14.1 innings of work. Buehler's WHIP is a bloated 1.44, and his 42.2% hard-hit rate suggests he is serving up precisely the kind of contact Harris thrives on.
While the wind is blowing in from center field, Harris's ability to spray line drives and ground balls through the gaps makes him less dependent on the long ball than his power-hitting teammates, giving him multiple paths to clearing this multi-hit line against a struggling starter.
