The read

Wrigley Field is bathed in afternoon sunshine today as the Twins visit the Cubs for a high-stakes cross-league battle under the wind-blown flags of Chicago. With the temperature climbing to 86 degrees and a 13 mph crosswind blowing from left to right, this game is set up to be a tactical chess match where starting pitching and early runs will dictate the pace. The books are offering the Twins at +122, and that is a price I will gladly take because of the starting pitching mismatch on the mound. Taj Bradley has been exceptional this season with a 9-3 record, 3.59 ERA, and 118 strikeouts in 102.2 innings. More importantly, he is an absolute weapon in the afternoon, carrying a dominant 2.96 Day ERA. On the other side, Matthew Boyd is a massive regression candidate. His 4.50 ERA is heavily masked by a 4.90 xERA, indicating he has been incredibly lucky. Boyd has also struggled in day games, posting a bloated 5.40 Day ERA, and he has a glaring weakness against right-handed hitters, allowing a .790 OPS.

Minnesota's coaching staff has aligned their lineup perfectly to exploit Boyd’s platoon splits, stacking seven right-handed or switch-hitters today, including Ryan Jeffers and Austin Martin. While the public will overreact to the fresh scratch of Royce Lewis due to hamstring tightness, this offense is still firing on all cylinders. Over their last three games, the Twins have averaged a stellar .370 xwOBA and a 44.2% hard-hit rate. Their high bat speed of 71.7 mph matches up perfectly against Boyd's vulnerable 92.7 mph four-seam fastball.

The Cubs' offense is currently in a power slump, managing a weak .297 xwOBA and an anemic 1.8% barrel rate over their last two games. They will find it incredibly difficult to generate hard contact against Bradley's 96.9 mph fastball and his nasty cutter. While the Cubs possess a slightly better bullpen and defensive metrics, Bradley's ability to dominate the top of Chicago’s lineup and pitch deep into the afternoon will carry the day. Getting the superior starting pitcher and the hotter team—with the Twins riding a 7-3 run in their last 10 games—at plus-money is a classic sharp bet.
