When you have a Cy Young contender like Tarik Skubal on the bump against a starting pitcher who has been completely shellshocked at home, you don't overcomplicate it—you take the side with the massive, quantifiable edge.
The matchup on the mound is a nightmare for Los Angeles. Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has been brilliant, holding right-handed hitters to a microscopic .194 batting average and a .591 OPS this year. That completely neutralizes an Angels order that features eight righties in the lineup tonight. Conversely, Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez has been a disaster, bringing a 7.55 ERA, a 1.74 WHIP, and a horrific 9.58 home ERA into tonight's start. Rodriguez has been utterly non-competitive against left-handed hitters, allowing a .357 average and an astronomical 1.068 OPS. The Tigers are starting six left-handed bats tonight, including Riley Greene, who boasts an .879 OPS against righties, and rookie Kevin McGonigle. With a 10 mph wind blowing out toward right field and Rodriguez's heavy fly-ball profile, Detroit's lefties should easily launch a few balls out of the park.
Beyond the starting pitching, the bullpen and defensive situations make this a mismatch. Yesterday's blown save by Angels closer Kirby Yates, who saw his fastball velocity dip to a career-low 91.0 mph, leaves the Los Angeles pen completely vulnerable. Their primary setup men are taxed, and they lack high-leverage depth. Detroit, on the other hand, has a rested high-leverage core in Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan, who did not appear in Friday's game and are fully fresh to lock things down. When you add the Tigers' superior defense and Dillon Dingler's elite play behind the plate, Detroit has multiple ways to secure a multi-run victory. Don't let the road designation scare you off; the Tigers have the weapons to turn this into a comfortable win.
