Under the closed roof of loanDepot park, the Miami Marlins look to even the series against the Cleveland Guardians in a Saturday afternoon clash that features a highly anticipated pitching matchup. This is a spot where the starting pitching mismatch and a severe bullpen availability deficit for Cleveland make the home team a very strong play. Eury Pérez takes the mound for Miami, boasting an elite 98.2 mph fastball that presents a massive challenge for a Guardians lineup that lacks high-end barrel rates against high-velocity heat. Pérez has been absolutely dominant against left-handed hitters this season, holding them to a .201 batting average and a .650 OPS. Otto Lopez (.458 xwOBA against the four-seam, .451 against the sinker) and Xavier Edwards (.392 batting average against the four-seam) match up perfectly to exploit Bibee’s specific pitch mix, especially in a friendly home environment where Miami has gone 31-18 this season.
The real difference-maker tonight, however, is the state of the bullpens. Cleveland's high-leverage relief corps is completely running on empty after yesterday's narrow 3-2 victory. Closer Cade Smith, who leads the league with 28 saves, and top setup man Hunter Gaddis have both thrown on three consecutive days from July 8 to July 10, rendering them unavailable today. Compounding this, the Guardians recently lost lefty specialist Tim Herrin to a left elbow injury on July 9. With Cleveland’s back-end depleted, any late-inning lead for Miami is safe in the hands of a fully rested Pete Fairbanks and Michael Petersen, who haven't thrown since July 8.
