The Braves' left-handed power bats, led by Matt Olson (.923 OPS vs. RHP, .976 Away OPS) and Michael Harris II (.885 OPS vs. RHP, .941 Away OPS), are statistically primed to strike against Skenes' diminished velocity.
The strongest argument against backing Atlanta tonight is their heavily depleted bullpen. With closer Raisel Iglesias, Didier Fuentes, and Dylan Lee likely unavailable due to high pitch counts on Monday, and Tyler Kinley placed on the paternity list today, the Braves have severe relief depth issues. However, starter Hurston Waldrep showed excellent resilience in his lone 2026 start (7.1 IP, 3.68 ERA), retiring 13 of his final 15 batters after a shaky first frame and posting a 62.5% whiff rate on his curveball. Crucially, Waldrep’s heavy ground-ball profile (3.67 GO/AO) is supported by an elite Braves defense that ranks 5th in MLB with 27 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and a .987 fielding percentage. Conversely, the Pirates' defense ranks 20th with just 1 DRS and a .983 fielding percentage, a deficiency magnified by today's fresh injury to shortstop Konnor Griffin (torn finger tendon), which leaves a defensive hole (-9 DRS at SS) for Pittsburgh.
Behind the plate, Drake Baldwin gives the Braves a subtle but vital edge with +1 Framing Run and 0 Blocks Above Average, contrasted with Henry Davis's -1 Framing Run and -4 Blocks Above Average. While Pittsburgh's bats have been hot, averaging 6.6 runs per game in their last 10, the Braves have dominated this matchup in 2026, sweeping the earlier three-game series by outscoring the Pirates 5.0 runs per game to 2.7 (+7 run differential). Bryan Reynolds tonight finds himself in a premier hitting environment. At PNC Park, Reynolds is an entirely different hitter, batting .325 with a magnificent .986 OPS compared to a measly .244 AVG on the road. He faces Braves right-hander Hurston Waldrep, who is making only his second start since February elbow surgery.
Waldrep has shown extremely shaky command with a 14.7% walk rate and a bloated 1.64 WHIP across his very brief 7.1 IP this season. The massive edge for this prop, however, lies in the late innings. The Braves bullpen is in absolute shambles: high-leverage arm Robert Suarez is on the IL, Tyler Kinley is on paternity leave, and key relievers Raisel Iglesias, Didier Fuentes, and Dylan Lee are expected to be completely unavailable due to high pitch counts from Monday's extra-inning game.
This forces Atlanta to rely on newly selected LHP Connor Thomas and recalled RHP James Karinchak in high-leverage spots. Reynolds is guaranteed 4-5 plate appearances batting third and will get multiple looks at extremely weak or fatigued pitching, making 1.5 total bases highly clearable tonight.
