Sports picks for Thursday, April 9, 2026

We’ve got a beautiful getaway day matinee in Miami as the Cincinnati Reds look to wrap up a statement series win while the Marlins fight to salvage a home split at loanDepot park. This matchup boils down to a significant disparity in pitching stability and a situational bullpen advantage that heavily favors the visitors. Rhett Lowder has been sensational since returning to the rotation, posting a 1.64 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP through his first two starts of 2026. He is a ground-ball specialist who is perfectly complemented by a Reds infield that remains the only unit in the majors without an error this season. Conversely, Marlins starter Max Meyer is a massive regression candidate; despite his 4.66 ERA, his underlying 5.72 xERA and 14.3% barrel rate suggest he’s been incredibly fortunate to avoid more damage. Against a red-hot Sal Stewart, who is hitting .448 over his last 10 games, Meyer’s luck is likely to run out. The situational context of this "rubber match" gives Cincinnati another massive edge in the late innings. Because the Reds were able to use bulk relievers in yesterday's loss, Terry Francona has his primary high-leverage arms—closer Emilio Pagan and setup man Pierce Johnson—fully rested and available. Miami’s bullpen, however, is running on fumes after using four relievers yesterday and several others on consecutive days. In a morning game following a night game, managers are often quick to pull starters, and I’ll take the fresh, elite Cincinnati relief corps over a taxed Marlins unit any day of the week. While the Marlins' offense has been more productive overall this season, they haven't seen a pitcher with Lowder’s current command and efficiency. The Reds also have the benefit of P.J. Higgins behind the plate today; Higgins is a defensive specialist who excels with the 2026 automated ball-strike system, providing Lowder with a steady target to navigate Miami's left-heavy lineup. With Elly De La Cruz boasting a career 1.333 OPS against Meyer in their previous encounters, the Reds have the specific matchup advantages needed to overcome their low team batting average. At plus money, I'm backing the better starter and the fresher bullpen to carry the Reds to a 3-1 series victory.

It is a chilly Thursday afternoon in the Bronx as the Athletics and Yankees settle their series in a rubber match that screams starting pitching disparity. While the 8-3 Yankees have the glitz and the home-field advantage, the value in this matchup sits squarely with the visiting side at a price that doesn't reflect the reality of the two men on the mound. Jeffrey Springs is currently pitching like an ace, sporting a 0.97 WHIP and coming off a dominant performance where he surrendered just two hits over six innings. More importantly, Springs has a documented history of neutralizing the Yankees' heavy hitters; he has limited Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to a combined one hit in eleven career at-bats, striking out Judge five times. The Yankees are currently asking Ryan Weathers to be a bridge starter for a rotation missing its three best arms, and the results have been shaky. Weathers has struggled to navigate lineups more than once through, failing to complete five innings in either of his starts this season while laboring with a 1.88 WHIP. This lack of length is a massive problem for a New York bullpen that is already gasping for air. The Yankees used four primary relievers in yesterday’s loss, including closer David Bednar, who looked vulnerable while throwing 21 pitches. If Weathers is chased by the fourth or fifth inning—as his recent form suggests—the Yankees will be forced to rely on a taxed middle relief corps against an Oakland lineup that has been specifically constructed today with seven right-handed bats to exploit him. The betting market is putting a heavy premium on the Yankees' record and their star power, but the underlying data tells a different story. New York has been stagnant against left-handed pitching recently, posting a meager 67 wRC+, and today they face a high-level lefty who matches up perfectly against their power profiles. While Oakland is resting a couple of key bats for this getaway day, they are sending the best player on the field to the mound in Springs. In a game where the 48-degree temperature and an 8-mph wind blowing in from right field will suppress scoring, give me the better starter and the plus-money price every single time. Tight games are decided by who can provide length and who has the fresher arms in the eighth; right now, those edges belong to Oakland.

We’ve got a chilly getaway day at Target Field as the Detroit Tigers look to avoid the broom against a Minnesota Twins squad that’s been hammering them all week. With temperatures in the low 40s and the wind blowing out toward the limestone in right field, this one has all the makings of a high-stress series finale where the starters might not be the ones deciding the outcome. Let’s be honest, both Jack Flaherty and Mick Abel have been tough to watch in the early going. Flaherty is struggling with his command in a major way, walking eight batters in just over eight innings of work, and his 8.53 xERA tells me he’s been even worse than the box score shows. But while Flaherty is battling the strike zone, Abel is getting treated like a tee-ball stand, giving up 14 hits in just 7.1 innings for a staggering 2.86 WHIP. In a matchup between two pitchers who can’t give their teams length, the advantage shifts heavily to the dugout with the freshest arms. That’s where Detroit takes this game. The Twins have used five relievers in back-to-back games to secure this series lead, leaving their middle relief core gassed. Meanwhile, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has been sitting on his high-leverage duo of Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan for this exact scenario. They are fully rested and haven't thrown a pitch in this series. The Twins have the momentum and a lineup full of lefties ready to exploit the wind, but the Tigers have the bullpen depth to navigate the late innings. The market is leaning toward Detroit for a reason; expect the veterans to stop the bleeding and salvage the finale.

The Raptors and Heat meet for the second time in 48 hours at Scotiabank Arena, with Toronto looking to complete a rare regular-season sweep of their Eastern Conference rivals. This matchup is defined by a massive schematic advantage for the Raptors, whose "Length Wall" of Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram, Jakob Poeltl, and rookie Collin Murray-Boyles has systematically dismantled Miami’s interior offense all season long. In their meeting on Tuesday, Toronto outscored Miami 70–34 in the paint and dominated the boards with 23 second-chance points compared to Miami's six. This wasn’t an outlier—Toronto has won all three head-to-head meetings this season by an average margin of 19 points while holding the Heat under 100 points in every contest. Miami’s stars, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, have struggled immensely against Toronto's size, combining to shoot just 25% from the floor in the most recent game. While Norman Powell is expected to play despite groin soreness, Miami’s offense remains stagnant, averaging just 94.0 PPG against the Raptors this season. The situational urgency also heavily favors the home side. Toronto (44-35) holds a narrow one-game lead for the #6 seed and is treating this stretch like a playoff series to avoid the Play-In Tournament. Miami (41-38), conversely, is mathematically locked into the #10 seed with zero upward mobility, which likely explains a defensive effort that has cratered to a 124.0 defensive rating over their last five games. With Miami starting a back-to-back tomorrow in Washington and sporting a mediocre 16-23 road record, they lack both the incentive and the defensive resistance to bridge the gap against a Raptors team posting a +5.0 net rating over their last five outings. Given Toronto’s consistent double-digit success against Miami this year and the high stakes for their playoff positioning, laying the 3.5 points is the clear value side.

High-stakes organizational resets meet late-season development as the Bulls look to sweep a two-game set in the nation's capital. While the Wizards have shifted into a "deconstruction phase" characterized by benching starters for entire fourth quarters, the Bulls are operating under a "clean slate" energy following the firing of their front office earlier this week. This motivational divide was on full display Tuesday night, when Chicago walked into Capital One Arena and dismantled this same Washington squad by 31 points. The statistical disparity here is too wide to ignore, even for a six-point spread. Washington’s defense has completely evaporated in the final weeks of the season, surrendering a catastrophic 128.3 points per 100 possessions over their last five games. During that stretch, opponents have posted a 62.6% effective field goal percentage and recorded nearly 34 assists per game. With the Wizards missing their primary veteran scoring options, the offense is being funneled through rookies like Will Riley and Bub Carrington. While Riley has shown scoring potential, the Bulls proved they have the blueprint to neutralize him, holding the rookie to just 2 points in their meeting 48 hours ago. On the other side, Chicago's revamped rotation is playing for their professional futures. Leonard Miller has nearly tripled his season scoring average to 15.2 PPG over his last five games, and Rob Dillingham is coming off a career-high 26-point performance against this porous Wizards perimeter. Chicago currently ranks 2nd in the league in pace (103.0), and in a high-possession track meet against a team that is openly prioritizing workload management over results, the Bulls have the depth and offensive efficiency to pull away. Washington is mired in a 10-game home losing streak for a reason; they lack the interior rim protection to stop Collin Sexton and Leonard Miller from dominating the paint. Lay the points with the team that is playing with professional urgency.

We have a frosty rubber match tonight at Citi Field as the young fire-thrower Nolan McLean looks to secure the series for the Mets against the veteran southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez, who enters this contest with a pristine 0.00 ERA. On paper, it looks like a battle of two dominant starters, but a peek under the hood and at the lineup cards tells a much different story. While Rodriguez has been spotless through 12 innings, his 2.27 xERA and low strikeout rate suggest that he has been dancing between raindrops against top-tier lineups. Tonight, he faces a Mets lineup specifically constructed to punish left-handers, featuring seven right-handed or switch-hitting bats including Francisco Alvarez, who carries a massive .950 OPS against southpaws. The most significant factor in this matchup isn't who is on the field, but who isn't. Arizona is rolling out what looks like a spring training split-squad lineup for a pivotal early-season rubber match. The late scratch of Corbin Carroll due to a hip injury, combined with rest days for Nolan Arenado and Gabriel Moreno, leaves the Diamondbacks without their three most dangerous offensive threats and three elite defensive anchors. This hollowed-out order has to face McLean, a rookie phenom with triple-digit heat and an elite high-spin curveball that has generated a 10.5 K/9 rate. Facing a depleted Arizona lineup that is already struggling with a 1-4 road record, McLean is in a prime position to dominate through the middle innings. Even if Rodriguez manages to keep this game close into the later frames, the disparity between these two bullpens is a chasm. The Mets (7-5) boast the top-rated relief corps in the majors with a 1.71 ERA and they enter tonight completely fresh after avoiding their high-leverage arms yesterday. Arizona (6-6), conversely, is saddled with a 5.77 bullpen ERA that has been a frequent liability. In the 45-degree chill of a Queens evening, runs will be at a premium, and the team with the superior strikeout pitching and deeper bullpen typically finds the edge. With Arizona’s stars watching from the dugout, the Mets are the clear play to take the series.

It is the final curtain call at the Barclays Center as two teams focused on the future meet for a late-season showcase of developmental talent. While both rosters have been hollowed out by injuries and strategic rest, there is a massive disparity in how these replacement units are actually performing on the floor. Indiana might be on a three-game skid, but they are playing a high-octane, efficient brand of basketball that Brooklyn simply hasn't matched. The Pacers’ offense has been a revelation over the last five games, posting an offensive rating of 116.7 and an elite 58.6% effective field goal percentage. Even with their primary rotation players sidelined, young pieces like Ethan Thompson and Jay Huff are finding high-quality looks within a system that has maintained a top-tier pace of 102.0 possessions per game. In contrast, Brooklyn’s offense remains stagnant at 108.5 points per 100 possessions. The Nets are also resting rookie playmaker Nolan Traoré tonight, which removes a player responsible for a 33% assist share from an already limited rotation. Without that engine, Brooklyn will likely struggle to keep pace with Indiana's scoring volume. Situational factors also lean toward the visitors. While Brooklyn is celebrating "Fan Appreciation" night, their underlying metrics suggest they are fortunate to have 20 wins. They rank dead last in the NBA in clutch situations with an 8-26 record and a league-worst 44.7% effective field goal percentage in close-game scenarios. If this 2.5-point spread leads to a tight finish, Brooklyn’s season-long inability to execute late is a major liability. Indiana has played much more competitive basketball against superior opponents recently, and their superior shot-making ceiling should allow them to cover this small number on the road.

Madison Square Garden sets the stage for a heavyweight Eastern Conference clash with massive seeding implications and a chance for the Knicks to seize the season-series tiebreaker. While the Celtics have been the hottest team in the league recently, the context of tonight’s matchup shifted significantly with the confirmation that Jaylen Brown is out due to Achilles tendinitis. This is a fresh absence for a player currently 4th in the NBA in scoring at 28.8 PPG and carrying a 35.1% usage rate. While Jayson Tatum is available for his first trip to the Garden since his 2025 injury, asking him to carry the offensive load against a New York defense featuring OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges—without his primary scoring partner—is a tall order for a 3.5-point spread. The Knicks enter this game with a distinct physical advantage, enjoying three full days of rest compared to Boston’s two. For the first time in weeks, New York has its optimal rotation fully intact, including Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and a revitalized bench featuring Miles McBride and Jose Alvarado. The depth chart favors New York heavily here; the Knicks' bench accounts for 32.4% of their total scoring, providing a stability that Boston’s second unit, currently leaning on G League call-ups and Sam Hauser in an elevated role, simply cannot match. New York’s ability to generate free throws (0.239 FT Rate) and control the glass (33.1% OREB) provides a high floor for their offense against a Celtics team missing its primary downhill threat. Perhaps the most telling metric for a spread this thin is late-game execution. New York ranks 3rd in the league in clutch Net Rating (+18.7) and has a 20-13 record in close games, while Boston has struggled to find consistent late-game answers, ranking just 10th in clutch efficiency. Jalen Brunson has transitioned into an elite distributor role lately, averaging 9.8 assists over his last five games, which should help the Knicks navigate Boston's league-leading scoring defense. At home, with the rest advantage and the Celtics missing a player responsible for over 34% of their point share, the Knicks are positioned to secure the win and the cover.

The lights at Kauffman Stadium are ready to shine on another chapter of this AL Central rivalry as the Royals look to continue their historical dominance over a struggling White Sox squad. You don't have to look hard to see why Kansas City is the heavy favorite here, starting with the massive discrepancy on the mound. While Seth Lugo has been sharp with a 1.59 ERA, the real story is White Sox starter Anthony Kay. He is currently pitching on borrowed time; despite a 4.00 ERA, his underlying xERA is a staggering 8.74. Kay has walked six batters in just nine innings and hasn't shown the ability to miss bats, coming off a zero-strikeout performance in his last outing. Against a Royals lineup that protects the plate and puts the ball in play, Kay is a ticking time bomb. The situational factors only widen the gap. The Royals have built a lineup specifically designed to punish left-handed pitching, featuring right-handed bats like Maikel Garcia, who is crushing southpaws to the tune of a .921 OPS. With a 14-mph wind blowing straight out to left field, the environment favors the Royals' right-handed power core including Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez. While the Royals' bullpen is admittedly thin after having to cover eight innings yesterday following Cole Ragans’ early exit, Seth Lugo is exactly the kind of durable veteran who can provide six or seven innings of length to bridge the gap directly to high-leverage arms like Lucas Erceg. Finally, you can't ignore the psychological weight of the "Kauffman Hex." The Royals have won 14 consecutive home games against the White Sox, outscoring them by more than 50 runs in that span. Chicago enters this series with the lowest-scoring offense in the majors and the highest strikeout rate, making them the perfect victim for Lugo’s high-spin arsenal. Between the White Sox's inability to manufacture runs and Kay’s alarming peripheral metrics, there is no reason to think the streak ends tonight. I’m laying the price with the Royals at home to take care of business in the series opener.

The red-hot Rockets look to lock in home-court advantage as they host a Philadelphia squad currently navigating a total structural crisis following a massive late-breaking injury. Houston enters tonight on a seven-game winning streak, having completely transformed their offensive identity into a high-velocity, ball-movement machine that has recorded 30 or more assists in six consecutive games. Conversely, the 76ers are reeling from consecutive double-digit losses and the sudden loss of Joel Embiid, who was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent surgery today in Houston. The statistical gap between these two teams right now is cavernous. Over their last five games, Houston has posted a league-best +16.9 Net Rating, fueled by an elite 59.6% effective field goal percentage and a defense holding opponents to just 30.8% from deep. Philadelphia’s season-long profile was already underwater (Net Rating -0.4), and that was with Embiid carrying a massive load. Without him, the 76ers lose a player who ranks top-five in scoring and provides the rim protection necessary to slow down Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson. In the only recent game Embiid missed (April 4), the 76ers were dismantled by 23 points by a sub-.500 Detroit team, highlighting how fragile this roster becomes when their focal point is removed. The matchup on the glass is where this game will likely be decided. Houston is the top rebounding team in the NBA (54.8%), while Philadelphia ranks near the bottom (49.0%). Without Embiid’s 10.8 rebounds per game, the 76ers are forced to rely on Andre Drummond, who has struggled recently, averaging just 4.6 rebounds over his last five appearances. When you combine Houston's elite home record (28-10) with Philadelphia’s current shooting slump—Tyrese Maxey is averaging six points below his season baseline over the last week—a six-point spread feels remarkably light. Houston is peaking at the perfect time, while the 76ers are just trying to keep their heads above water. Lay the points with the Rockets.

The lights are bright at Chase Center for an Amazon Prime showcase, but the star power is significantly lopsided as the Lakers fight for home-court advantage while the Warriors look toward the Play-In. This line is essentially a pick’em, which feels like a miscalculation given the massive disparity in motivation and available personnel. Golden State (37-42) is officially locked into the No. 10 seed and has already signaled they are punting tonight’s result by resting Stephen Curry, whose absence is a fresh development. While the Warriors’ system remains respectable, they are 13-25 without Curry this season, and they lose the one player capable of exploiting the Lakers' recent perimeter defensive lapses. The Lakers (50-29), conversely, are tied for the No. 4 seed and desperation is high after a three-game skid. The return of LeBron James provides the offensive floor that was missing in their 87-point performance against Oklahoma City. Even without Luka Doncic, the Lakers possess a structural advantage in the paint that Golden State cannot match with Kristaps Porzingis sidelined. Los Angeles generates a 0.323 free-throw rate—one of the highest in the league—and they should live at the stripe against a Warriors frontcourt that lacks a true rim protector tonight. Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura represent a massive physical mismatch for a Golden State lineup that is forced to start Pat Spencer and Brandin Podziemski in high-usage roles. Historically, this matchup has belonged to Los Angeles when Curry isn’t on the floor. The Lakers are 2-1 against the Warriors this season, including a 28-point blowout in late February where Golden State’s backcourt simply couldn’t manufacture enough high-quality looks to keep pace. While the Warriors' bench has seen a spark from Charles Bassey recently, the Lakers’ veteran core of James and Ayton is too experienced to let a game with these seeding implications slip away against a depleted roster. I’m taking the points with the team that actually needs the win.
