Sports picks for Monday, March 9, 2026

Welcome to Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, where a desperate Panama squad fights to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive against a winless Colombia team simply trying to avoid relegation to the 2029 qualifiers. Panama enters this afternoon clash with genuine momentum after staging a dramatic late-inning comeback victory over Canada. Meanwhile, Colombia is reeling from a disastrous 0-3 start that has completely shattered their tournament plans and depleted their roster. With 39-year-old veteran Paolo Espino taking the mound for his final professional start before retiring, the emotional and motivational edges sit squarely in Panama's dugout. The defining factor of this matchup is a catastrophic pitching crisis for Colombia. After Julio Teheran was scratched due to shoulder pain earlier in the tournament and Luis Patiño managed just one out yesterday against Cuba, Colombia’s pitching infrastructure collapsed. Their bullpen was forced to burn through nine different relievers to cover the rest of the game. Today, they are handing the ball to Adrián Almeida, who is being pressed into starting duty on just one day of rest after pitching against Canada. Panama counters with Espino and a pitching staff that carries a sturdy 2.93 team ERA into the contest. They have managed their arms efficiently and have plenty of reliable coverage remaining in the bullpen. Colombia's bats offer zero safety net for their exhausted pitching staff. Through three games, the lineup is hitting a collective .207 with zero home runs, entirely lacking the slugging required to mask their severe run prevention issues. Panama’s offense is much better equipped to take advantage of this specific spot. Featuring the elite speed and aggressive baserunning of José Caballero and Enrique Bradfield Jr., Panama is built to manufacture runs and apply constant stress on a fatigued pitching staff prone to making mistakes. With Colombia completely out of rested arms and unable to generate consistent offense, Panama is perfectly positioned to dictate the pace of this game from the opening pitch and cover the run line.

We’ve got a relegation battle at Daikin Park as Great Britain and Brazil square off to avoid the basement of Pool B and secure automatic qualification for the 2029 World Baseball Classic. While neither team will be advancing to the quarterfinals, the stakes here are very real, and the talent gap between these two rosters is significant enough to warrant laying the runs with the heavy favorite. Brazil's pitching staff has been completely overwhelmed throughout pool play, posting a disastrous 15.48 team ERA. They have surrendered 39 runs across three games, capped off by a 16-0 mercy-rule defeat to Mexico where their offense was stifled to just two hits. Their bullpen depth is thoroughly exhausted, and after showing a brief flash of power in their opener against the United States, the lineup has suffered back-to-back shutouts. They simply do not have the arms to navigate an opposing lineup multiple times through the order without unraveling. Great Britain hasn't found the win column either, but their underlying performance paints a very different picture. Their 6.84 team ERA is vastly superior to Brazil's, and their lineup features legitimate MLB-affiliated talent like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Harry Ford who can consistently capitalize on pitching mistakes. They remained competitive in a 7-4 loss to Italy and possess the offensive firepower to exploit a fatigued Brazilian staff. With Brazil failing to cover the run line in all three of their matchups thus far and consistently getting blown out, Great Britain holds the clear advantage in both rotation stability and lineup depth to pull away and secure their spot in the next tournament cycle.

We've got a massive Pool A showdown tonight at Hiram Bithorn Stadium as undefeated Puerto Rico hosts undefeated Cuba with the top seed on the line. The atmosphere in San Juan is going to be electric, but when you strip away the emotion and look at the situational spot, one team has a glaring structural advantage that makes this steep run line playable. The biggest factor in this game is the schedule and bullpen availability. Cuba comes into this matchup on no rest after a 7-4 win over Colombia yesterday where they were forced to use eight different pitchers. In the World Baseball Classic, where strict pitch counts and consecutive-day rest rules dictate pitching management, burning through your mid-relief the day before facing a loaded MLB lineup is a recipe for disaster. Puerto Rico, on the other hand, had Sunday off. Their elite bullpen—anchored by Edwin Díaz, Fernando Cruz, and Jovani Morán—is fully rested and ready to completely shorten the game behind starter Elmer Rodríguez. At the plate, Cuba has relied heavily on the long ball to generate offense, but they are doing so with a sub-.300 on-base percentage and alarmingly high strikeout rates. That all-or-nothing approach is going to struggle against a Puerto Rican pitching staff that currently boasts the lowest team ERA in the tournament, having allowed just three runs across two games. With Nolan Arenado anchoring a lineup of proven big-league bats, Puerto Rico has the depth to exploit Cuba's taxed pitching staff in the middle-to-late innings. Give me the host nation to pull away late and cover the number.

Under the lights at loanDepot park in Miami, a stacked Venezuelan squad looks to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals against a Nicaraguan team trying to salvage some pride in their pool play finale. With Venezuela sitting at 2-0 and Nicaragua at 0-3, the tournament stakes and overall talent disparity couldn't be more evident in this Pool D clash. Venezuela brings an offensive juggernaut to the diamond, having already outscored their first two opponents by a combined 17-5 margin. The lineup features elite MLB production from top to bottom, with Ronald Acuña Jr. setting the table and Luis Arraez entering this contest fresh off a massive four-hit, two-homer performance against Israel. Behind them, the combination of Willson Contreras and Salvador Perez provides immense power against a Nicaraguan pitching staff that has been heavily taxed over the last three days. Venezuela's starter, Yoendrys Gómez, brings legitimate major league experience and strikeout capability to the mound, giving them a significant edge in the starting pitching matchup before even factoring in the offensive gap. Nicaragua has shown brief flashes of competitiveness, specifically in a tight one-run loss to the Netherlands, but their pitching depth has been thoroughly exposed by high-end offenses, which was evident in their 12-3 defeat to the Dominican Republic. Tonight, they turn to left-hander Danilo Bermudez, who primarily pitches in the Nicaraguan Professional Baseball League. While Bermudez provided a solid relief outing earlier in the tournament against the DR, asking him to navigate this Venezuelan lineup multiple times through the order is a monumental task. With Nicaragua mathematically eliminated and their bullpen running on fumes after three consecutive losses, the gap in available firepower is simply too wide. Venezuela has the motivation to clinch their advancement cleanly, and their relentless lineup will generate enough scoring opportunities to cover the heavy run line.

Welcome to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, where the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (28-3) look to punch their ticket to the WCC Championship against an Oregon State team (17-15) fighting to keep their head coach's farewell tour alive. The biggest story in this semifinal matchup isn't just the talent gap, but the massive rest disparity. Gonzaga has been waiting in Vegas for eight days with a double-bye, while Oregon State is operating on zero days of rest after emptying the tank in yesterday's emotional one-point win over San Francisco. In a high-stakes conference tournament setting, asking a physically fatigued underdog to hang within a large spread against a well-rested juggernaut is a notoriously bad bet. The underlying metrics point to a severe uphill climb for the Beavers. Gonzaga boasts a +26.2 Adjusted Efficiency Margin and ranks inside the top 10 nationally in defensive efficiency. They are built to completely suffocate an Oregon State offense that ranks outside the top 150 in offensive efficiency. Furthermore, Gonzaga prefers to play fast, pushing a tempo of 69.4 possessions per game compared to Oregon State's slower 65.3 pace. A fast-paced track meet against an elite offense is the last thing a squad on a back-to-back with heavy legs wants to see. When these teams met a month ago, the Bulldogs dictated the terms and cruised to a 20-point victory. Oregon State's only path to keeping this competitive relies on high-variance outside shooting from guards Dez White and Josiah Lake II. While White was brilliant from deep in yesterday's quarterfinal, repeating that performance on tired legs against a fresh Gonzaga defense is highly improbable. Inside, the Beavers simply have no statistical or physical answer for Graham Ike, who averages 19.7 points on 59.4 percent effective field goal shooting and dominated the paint in their previous meeting. Gonzaga's superior ball security ensures they will maximize their offensive possessions, and their sheer physical advantages will eventually wear Oregon State down in the second half. Lay the points with the rested favorite.

We've got late-night WCC Tournament action under the bright lights of Orleans Arena as the high-flying Santa Clara Broncos clash with the physical, defensive-minded Saint Mary's Gaels. The elephant in the room for this semifinal matchup is the massive disparity in rest and the physical toll it takes in March. Saint Mary's enters this contest fresh off an eight-day layoff after securing a coveted triple-bye, while Santa Clara is playing on zero days of rest following a grueling quarterfinal victory last night. In a high-stakes tournament setting, dead legs become a glaring liability, especially against a Gaels squad that actively wants to grind the game down to a methodical 65.4 possessions and wear you out physically. The underlying metrics point directly to where Saint Mary's will exploit this situational advantage: the glass. When these two teams squared off just two weeks ago, the Gaels utterly humiliated the Broncos on the boards with a staggering 51-21 rebounding margin en route to a 19-point blowout win. Saint Mary's boasts an elite 35.4 percent offensive rebounding rate, anchored by the physical presence of Paulius Murauskas. Santa Clara thrives on pace (a WCC-leading 71.7 possessions) and perimeter shooting, tying a tournament record with 15 made three-pointers last night. However, asking a fatigued jump-shooting team to replicate that performance against a Saint Mary's defense that ranks 22nd nationally in adjusted efficiency (98.0) and allows just 64.2 points per game is a tough bet to make. Furthermore, Saint Mary's isn't just well-rested; they are playing their best basketball of the season right now. They carry an eight-game winning streak into Las Vegas, punctuated by a signature win over Gonzaga where they held the Bulldogs to a season-low offensive output while sophomore Mikey Lewis erupted for 31 points. Santa Clara is a dangerous team with real defensive disruption, led by Allen Graves and his two steals per game, but they are stepping into a buzzsaw tonight. The combination of a severe rest deficit, a massive rebounding disadvantage, and an opponent peaking at the right time is too much to overcome. I'll gladly lay the short number with the fresher, more physical favorite.

The lights are bright in Houston as the United States and Mexico clash in a high-stakes Pool B showdown that will likely decide the group. When you look at the starting pitching matchup, the talent gap between these two rosters becomes glaringly apparent. The United States is sending out reigning National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes, who brings a dominant 1.96 ERA and 0.95 WHIP into the contest. On the other side, Mexico is turning to veteran Manny Barreda, whose limited Major League action has yielded a 13.50 ERA and 2.25 WHIP. In a tournament environment where early offensive momentum dictates bullpen usage, asking Barreda to navigate a lineup featuring Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Bobby Witt Jr., and a red-hot Gunnar Henderson is an incredibly tall order. Henderson is coming off a four-hit performance against Great Britain, and the American offense has already posted 24 runs in their first two games. Mexico has taken care of business against Brazil and Great Britain, largely thanks to big moments from Jonathan Aranda and Randy Arozarena. But stepping into the box against Skenes is a completely different assignment than facing those lesser pitching staffs. Skenes has the swing-and-miss stuff to neutralize Mexico's top threats and hand a lead over to a rested American bullpen. With the United States boasting massive advantages on the mound and top-to-bottom in the batting order, they have the firepower to open up an early lead and pull away for a comfortable multi-run victory in this de facto pool championship.

Welcome to Barclays Center, where the Brooklyn Nets look to build off a historic comeback win as they host a Memphis Grizzlies squad scrambling to field a healthy rotation. Tonight's matchup features two teams deep in the lottery race dealing with severe roster limitations. Memphis arrives laying a short number on the road, but a closer look at the available personnel suggests that price is asking far too much of a Grizzlies rotation that has been entirely hollowed out over the weekend. The Grizzlies have been an impressive offensive story lately, posting a +3.3 net rating over their last five games and maintaining an elite pace that has seen them score 110-plus points in 15 straight contests. However, the players responsible for that recent competitive surge are suddenly missing. Ty Jerome, Cedric Coward, and Scotty Pippen Jr. all carry fresh doubtful tags tonight. That trio accounted for a massive chunk of Memphis's playmaking, with Jerome alone sporting a 33.3 percent usage rate and producing over 35 percent of the team's points when active. Without them, the fast-paced system is left relying on a threadbare group led by Cam Spencer and Jaylen Wells. Memphis's bench production already sits at a dismal 13.7 percent of their top rotation's scoring, and losing three primary ball-handlers at once makes it nearly impossible to sustain their recent offensive efficiency. Brooklyn is dealing with its own fresh absence, smartly opting to rest leading scorer Michael Porter Jr. on the front end of a back-to-back. But the Nets are much better equipped to absorb the blow tonight. They carry a significant depth advantage, with a bench unit supplying nearly 28 percent of their scoring punch. Big men Nicolas Claxton and Day'Ron Sharpe give Brooklyn a distinct edge on the glass against a Grizzlies team that just cited defensive rebounding as the main culprit in their recent loss to the Clippers. Throw in Ziaire Williams stepping into a high-volume role against his former team following a clutch 23-point breakout, and the Nets have enough functional depth to protect their home floor. Take the points with Brooklyn against a severely depleted Memphis squad.

Welcome to the Paycom Center, where the Western Conference's top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder host a Denver Nuggets squad searching for answers after a brutal week. The Thunder are rolling on a five-game winning streak and playing the most complete basketball in the league right now, boasting a season-long +10.9 net rating that only gets scarier when you look at their recent defensive metrics. Over their last five games, Oklahoma City has locked down opponents to an elite 48.9% effective field goal percentage and a suffocating 99.3 defensive rating. On the other side, Denver’s defense has completely cratered. The Nuggets are giving up 124.8 points per game with an abysmal 122.2 defensive rating over their last five, culminating in a disastrous 39-point blowout loss to the Knicks. The stylistic clash heavily favors the home team, and we've already seen how this plays out twice this season. Oklahoma City thrives on pushing the pace (100.6) and forcing opponents into a track meet, which is exactly how they secured 6-point and 10-point victories over Denver earlier this year. The Thunder win the math game by taking care of the basketball—featuring a top-tier 12.5% turnover rate—while leveraging Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's elite efficiency (31.6 PPG on 66.5% true shooting). Meanwhile, Denver prefers a slower 99.0 pace to run their half-court sets through Nikola Jokic. When forced to play at Oklahoma City's tempo, the Nuggets have struggled to maintain their usual defensive rotations, recently allowing opponents to shoot 40.0% from deep. The situational injury report also points toward laying the points. Denver's offensive ceiling is heavily tied to Jamal Murray, who is questionable tonight with a fresh ankle sprain suffered just a few days ago. A hobbled Murray facing Lu Dort and the Thunder's relentless perimeter ball pressure is a recipe for empty possessions. Conversely, Oklahoma City gets a massive boost with the return of Ajay Mitchell, who brings 14.1 points per game and elite playmaking to their second unit. Even if this game is tight down the stretch, the Thunder's massive +19.9 net rating in clutch situations gives them a reliable floor to pull away from a Denver team that ranks 27th in the clutch. I'll gladly lay the six points with the more stable, defensively disciplined team on their home floor.

Late-season basketball in Salt Lake City brings us a massive motivational mismatch between a Golden State squad clinging to its postseason life and a Utah Jazz franchise actively steering toward the lottery. The Warriors enter the Delta Center laying a touchdown, and while both teams look vastly different than they did on opening night, the context heavily favors the visitors. Golden State is fighting to stay afloat in the Western Conference standings at 32-31, whereas the 19-45 Jazz have faced league-wide scrutiny for late-game developmental rotations that prioritize preserving a protected draft pick over closing out competitive games. The real separator tonight is the late-breaking illness sweeping through the Utah locker room. The Jazz have listed their primary offensive engines, Keyonte George and Ace Bailey, as questionable just hours before tip-off, while Isaiah Collier is already ruled out. George dictates Utah's tempo with a massive 27.5% usage rate, and Bailey is coming off a career-high 32-point performance. Even if they manage to suit up, playing through a viral outbreak severely compromises the only consistent scoring threats Utah currently has available. Golden State is intentionally resting Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford on the front end of a back-to-back, but their healthy core of Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green, and De'Anthony Melton provides far more operational stability. The underlying metrics confirm the gap between these two rosters. Golden State holds a +1.2 Net Rating on the season, built on an efficient 55.1% effective field goal percentage. Conversely, Utah's defense remains a persistent liability, surrendering 120.5 points per 100 possessions. While the Jazz showed a slight Net Rating bump over their last five games, their offensive eFG% plummeted to an abysmal 49.6% during that span, exposing a team struggling to generate quality looks. Golden State has already dismantled Utah in three head-to-head meetings this season by margins of 16, 9, and 17 points. With the Warriors treating this as a must-win and Utah's lineup crippled by illness, laying the seven points is the only logical play.

We've got a late-night cross-conference clash at the Intuit Dome as the surging LA Clippers host the New York Knicks. The situational spot here screams regression for the visitors. New York is mired in a grueling five-game Western road trip and playing the second night of a back-to-back after a physical 110-97 loss to the Lakers yesterday. Jalen Brunson had to log a taxing 42 minutes in that defeat, and now the Knicks are resting Mitchell Robinson. That is a massive subtraction for a team that relies on its league-leading offensive rebounding to survive low-possession, grinding games, especially with heavy road legs. Meanwhile, the Clippers are a completely different team than their season-long metrics suggest. Following their mid-season acquisitions, Los Angeles has won four of its last five games, posting a dominant +13.2 net rating and a 124.1 offensive rating over that span. With Darius Garland now fully integrated into the starting lineup and Bennedict Mathurin providing explosive secondary scoring, the Clippers are clicking at the perfect time. Furthermore, they hold a massive rest advantage, having enjoyed two full days off without leaving Los Angeles since mid-week. On the court, the data reveals a critical matchup flaw for New York. Despite their elite overall defense under Mike Brown, the Knicks are currently allowing an NBA-high 48% from three-point range to opposing small forwards. That structural vulnerability is a disaster waiting to happen against Kawhi Leonard, who commands a 32.8% usage rate and is perfectly positioned to exploit the perimeter. While the Knicks possess the league's top clutch rating, the compounding factors of schedule fatigue, Robinson's absence, and the Clippers' explosive recent form point to a clear edge for the home team. I'm backing the Clippers catching the points.

We’re under the lights at Rocket Arena tonight as the heavily-favored Cleveland Cavaliers look to bounce back against a battered Philadelphia 76ers squad. The defining factor in this matchup is the fresh absence of Tyrese Maxey, who exits the lineup today and takes his 26.0 points per game and massive 28.9% usage rate with him. When a player with that level of offensive gravity suddenly drops out of the rotation, the market adjustment rarely captures the full extent of the immediate disjointedness. Philadelphia was already in a massive rut, posting an abysmal -11.8 Net Rating over their last five games. Now, without their primary initiator, they are forced to hand the keys to a makeshift backcourt featuring Cam Payne and Quentin Grimes. The data suggests Philadelphia will simply not be able to keep pace. Over their last five contests, the Sixers' defense has completely cratered, surrendering 117.8 points per game and allowing opponents to shoot a 56.8% effective field goal percentage. That is a disastrous recipe against a Cleveland roster that boasts a season-long 117.2 offensive rating and a 55.5% effective field goal percentage. The Cavaliers have their offensive engine back online, with Donovan Mitchell proving his health by dropping 30 points on 18 shots in his return yesterday. A core of Mitchell, James Harden, and Evan Mobley presents a talent mismatch that Philadelphia’s current starting five cannot realistically answer for a full 48 minutes. While laying 14 points with a team on the second night of a back-to-back is always uncomfortable, the situational spot actually leans toward a blowout. Cleveland remains at home after a frustrating 11-point loss to Boston where they shot a dismal 2-of-22 from three-point range in the first half. They are primed for positive shooting regression against a leaky Philadelphia perimeter defense that is giving up 37.1% from beyond the arc recently. We already have a data point from mid-January where Cleveland dismantled this Sixers team by 26 points, and that was before Philadelphia lost its lead guard. The structural advantages all point to the Cavaliers executing efficiently and stretching this margin beyond the number.
