The read
New England opens its home schedule at Gillette Stadium after letting the Seattle opener slip away. Pittsburgh arrives with a win, but both offenses have work to do.
I’m taking the points because Pittsburgh’s defensive approach presents a credible problem for this particular Patriots offense. The Steelers played zone on all 26 Atlanta dropbacks and generated four sacks while blitzing only 7.7%. Atlanta’s depleted quarterback situation limits what that performance proves, but the matchup still matters: Maye struggled with Seattle’s coverage and forced throws late. Watt and Highsmith give Pittsburgh a route to disrupting him without committing extra defenders to the rush.
A.J. Brown’s fresh absence makes New England’s offensive adjustment harder. Its play success rate against Seattle fell from 46.7% with Brown to 35.1% after he left. That does not establish how the offense will perform without him every week, but it puts a real burden on the remaining receivers and the protection. Henderson’s return and New England’s additional preparation time offer answers; I’m not assuming another interception collapse.
Pittsburgh has limitations of its own. Pittman is newly out after contributing 58 receiving yards in the opener, and an offense that converted three of 13 third downs has not earned an assumption of sustained scoring. Carlton Davis III’s absence gives Rodgers an opening against New England’s coverage, but it does not erase Pittsburgh’s offensive concerns.
Those concerns are why I prefer +4.5 to the Steelers moneyline. Maye’s established ability and New England’s stronger opening-game offensive success rate make a Patriots win entirely plausible. Pittsburgh’s defensive matchup gives me enough reason to take the cushion at -102, without requiring its depleted offense to win outright.

Props on this game
4- GARY'S PICKRICO DOWDLERECEIVING YARDS UNDER 51.5
I’m taking under 51.5 receiving yards at -113. Dowdle caught two of five targets for only six yards in the opener, and he averaged 19.6 receiving yards across nine games in 2025, staying below this number eight times.
His role is substantial, but it is split between rushing, protection and short backfield targets rather than built to produce 52 receiving yards. The strongest counter is Michael Pittman Jr.’s fresh absence: Pittsburgh threw 40 times last week, and Dowdle’s five targets show he could inherit some of the vacated work.
Even with that potential bump, this line asks for nearly triple his 2025 average.
- GARY'S PICKDARNELL WASHINGTONRECEIVING YARDS OVER 12.5
I’m playing over 12.5 receiving yards at -115. Washington cleared this line in eight of 10 games in 2025 and opened this season with 18 yards on two catches.
He played 44 snaps in Week 1, and Pittman’s absence should preserve Pittsburgh’s heavy two-tight-end usage. New England also blitzed on 44.4% of Seattle’s dropbacks, creating a reason for Rodgers to use his large tight end as a short answer.
The concern is Washington’s limited receiving role: he drew only two targets in the opener, and Pittsburgh ran on 47.6% of his snaps. One missed connection could sink a low-volume over.
- THE LONG SHOTDK METCALFANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m taking Metcalf to score at +230. He received 10 targets and a 27% target share in Week 1 while leaving the field only for kneel-downs.
With Pittman ruled out today, Metcalf is the clear first option whenever Pittsburgh reaches scoring range, and Carlton Davis III’s absence removes another experienced Patriots corner from the matchup. The strongest objection is Christian Gonzalez, who erased Jaxon Smith-Njigba when directly covering him in the opener.
Metcalf also converted his 10 Week 1 targets into only four catches for 40 yards, so the volume has not yet become efficient production.
- THE LONG SHOTHUNTER HENRYANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m betting Henry to score at +250. With A.J. Brown unavailable, Henry remains one of Maye’s established targets in the condensed part of the field.
The matchup also carries specific evidence: Henry caught eight passes for 90 yards and both New England touchdowns against Pittsburgh last season. At this price, one red-zone opportunity can be enough. The contrary case is meaningful.
Henry drew only three targets and finished with 26 yards in the opener, while Pittsburgh held Atlanta to 118 net passing yards and never allowed a red-zone snap. Last year’s meeting is useful, but it is still only one game under different weekly circumstances.
