The read
Soldier Field opens its home schedule with both teams unbeaten and first place in the NFC North at stake. Both won their openers with late scoring bursts; now they meet with Minnesota starting Carson Wentz.
I’m backing Chicago because its offense has the stronger foundation for sustaining possessions. Caleb Williams produced 269 passing yards and 65 rushing yards against Carolina, while the team rushed for 291 yards. That rushing total is no expectation for today, but Williams, D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai give Chicago several ways to challenge Minnesota. Both backs practiced fully. Williams also brings development that predates the opener: he took 24 sacks in 2025, and Chicago enters its second season in Ben Johnson’s offense.
Minnesota’s pressure is the biggest obstacle. Its four sacks against Green Bay mattered, and Brian Flores can force Chicago into difficult decisions. But Minnesota also allowed 387 passing yards. Its successful opening run-defense performance came against backup running backs and an injured offensive line. I expect Chicago to present a more demanding combination of rushing threats and passing answers.
Wentz deserves credit for his three touchdown passes, but Minnesota’s 39 points overstate the evidence for sustained offense. Its final two touchdown possessions began at Green Bay’s 1- and 14-yard lines, and another scoring drive survived three third-down defensive penalties. Murray’s absence is fresh, but Wentz already handled most of that opener; this is not an entirely untested replacement. Jennings’ confirmed absence further narrows the available receiving group.
Chicago allowing 37 points is the strongest argument against laying this spread. Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson can exploit defensive mistakes, so this is a measured play. Still, I trust Chicago’s offensive balance to create separation more than I trust Minnesota to reproduce its favorable scoring situations. That is enough for me to lay -4.5 at -110.

4- GARY'S PICKD'ANDRE SWIFTRECEIVING YARDS UNDER 75.5
I’m taking Swift under 75.5 receiving yards at -113. This number is far above his established receiving production: he averaged 13.3 yards over the listed 10 games in 2025, never reached 76, and opened 2026 with 10 yards on one target.
Chicago is using him as its lead runner, not building the passing game around him. The strongest counter is Minnesota’s heavy pressure package, which could generate checkdowns, especially if Caleb Williams has to get the ball out quickly.
Swift’s ankle and knee issues also create some uncertainty around how Chicago divides the backfield work. Even allowing for extra outlets, he would need a drastic role change or a long catch to threaten this line.
- GARY'S PICKCALEB WILLIAMSPASSING ATTEMPTS OVER 31.5
I’m taking Williams over 31.5 passing attempts at -109. He cleared this number in nine of his final 10 listed games from 2025, averaging 34.5 attempts over that span. He threw only 29 times in the opener because Chicago ran for 291 yards and pulled away late.
Minnesota allowed just 66 rushing yards in Week 1, and Brian Flores’ front is a much tougher test for Chicago’s ground game. A closer game with frequent short throws against Minnesota’s pressure can push Williams back into his established volume range. The strongest counter is that Chicago is favored and remains committed to Swift, Kyle Monangai and Williams as runners.
Minnesota’s pressure can also end dropbacks with sacks, which do not count as attempts. The 2026 evidence is only one game, and that game finished below the line.
- THE LONG SHOTJUSTIN JEFFERSONANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m taking Jefferson to score at +170. Carson Wentz targeted him nine times after entering Minnesota’s opener, and Jefferson converted eight catches into 92 yards and two touchdowns. Chicago allowed three passing touchdowns and was highly vulnerable near its goal line in Week 1, permitting successful plays on nine of 10 red-zone snaps.
Jauan Jennings being out removes another established receiver from Minnesota’s distribution, making Jefferson the clearest scoring option when the field contracts. The strongest counter is the sample: Jefferson’s entire 2026 line comes from one game, while his listed final 10 games of 2025 included only two performances above 79 receiving yards. Chicago can also devote extra coverage to him and force Wentz to use T.J.
Hockenson, Jordan Addison or the running backs. At +170, I’m willing to bet that Jefferson still earns the premium opportunities.
- THE LONG SHOTT.J. HOCKENSONANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m taking Hockenson to score at +340. He drew five targets and caught four passes for 36 yards and a touchdown in the opener, including a scoring connection with Wentz. Chicago surrendered five offensive touchdowns to Carolina, including three through the air, and its one-game red-zone results were especially poor.
With Jennings unavailable, Minnesota has a reason to lean further into Jefferson and its tight ends, and Hockenson is a natural middle-of-the-field and end-zone option. The strongest counter is that this is still a five-target role based on one 2026 game, and his 2025 receiving production was inconsistent. Jefferson commands the first read near the goal line, while Aaron Jones can finish drives on the ground.
This is a lower-probability outcome, but +340 pays enough for the matchup and likely scoring role.
