The read
Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead pairs Kansas City’s encouraging opener with Indianapolis’ first chance to answer a rough start. Both quarterbacks have returned from season-ending injuries, and both offenses have a productive running back to lean on.
I’m backing Kansas City because its strongest demonstrated weapons attack the problems Indianapolis still needs to solve. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 173 yards against Denver, while the Colts surrendered 202 rushing yards against Baltimore. Indianapolis has moved defensive communication to Akeem Davis-Gaither after its alignment breakdowns. That is a sensible correction, but getting lined up and bringing Walker down are separate jobs. I expect Kansas City’s running game to remain effective even without another exceptional individual performance.
The more consequential advantage is on the other side. Kansas City produced four sacks in its opener; Indianapolis allowed nine quarterback hits. Daniel Jones completed three of 11 pressured passes for nine yards against Baltimore. Jonathan Taylor’s 98 rushing yards showed that Indianapolis can generate offense, but if Kansas City forces Jones into obvious passing situations, I trust its defense to end possessions and create opportunities for separation.
There is a real argument against laying the points. Kansas City succeeded on only 34.8% of early downs and benefited from major gains by Walker and Travis Kelce. Indianapolis can improve defensively, and Taylor gives it a way to keep possessions alive. Those considerations keep my confidence measured: one opener does not establish either team’s ceiling.
Still, I see more than a Kansas City win case. The combination of a productive rushing attack and a defense positioned to disrupt Indianapolis’ passing game gives the Chiefs a credible path to covering -6.5. At -102, that is the ticket I prefer over paying -120 for the Colts’ cushion or requiring an Indianapolis outright win at +235.

4- GARY'S PICKKENNETH WALKER IIIRUSHING ATTEMPTS OVER 18.5
I’m taking over 18.5 carries at -103. Walker handled 23 attempts in his Kansas City debut, played 68% of the offensive snaps and now faces an Indianapolis defense that allowed 202 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in its opener.
Kansas City is favored by 6.5, so the likely game script also supports another run-heavy workload. The strongest counter is Walker’s 2025 history: he averaged only 12.6 carries across his last 10 games and never cleared this number.
That came in a different backfield, but one game with the Chiefs is still a small sample, and Emmett Johnson earned eight carries behind him.
- GARY'S PICKKEENAN ALLENRECEPTIONS OVER 3.5
I’m taking over 3.5 receptions at -115. Allen caught all six of his targets in the opener, and his short-area route-running gives Daniel Jones a practical answer against a Kansas City defense that produced four sacks and pressured Denver throughout Week 1.
Indianapolis is a 6.5-point underdog, increasing the chance that Jones has to throw while chasing the game. Allen also cleared this line in six of his last 10 games in 2025.
The concern is that he played only 67% of the offensive snaps in Week 1 and averaged exactly 3.7 catches over that prior 10-game sample, leaving little cushion. Kansas City also allowed only 131 passing yards in its opener.
- THE LONG SHOTKENNETH WALKER IIIANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m betting Walker to score at -200. He produced both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in his Chiefs debut, finished with 32 touches and is the primary back for a home favorite against a defense that surrendered four rushing scores to Baltimore.
Kansas City’s commitment to its new ground game gives Walker multiple paths to the end zone. The strongest objection is the price: -200 requires a very high hit rate, and one game does not establish that Walker owns every scoring opportunity.
Emmett Johnson received 10 touches in the opener, while Mahomes and the passing game can also account for Kansas City’s goal-line touchdowns.
- THE LONG SHOTRASHEE RICEANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m taking Rice to score at +165. He played 83% of Kansas City’s offensive snaps in Week 1 and converted one of his two targets into a touchdown.
Indianapolis just allowed 324 passing yards, 8.48 yards per defensive play and successful plays on half of Baltimore’s snaps, so Mahomes should have opportunities to create favorable red-zone matchups for his top wideout. Rice also brings a stronger established receiving role than his opening target count suggests.
The clear contrary evidence is that he saw only two targets against Denver while Kansas City leaned heavily on Walker. If that run-first distribution continues, Rice may not receive enough volume to justify even an attractive plus price.
