The read
Raymond James Stadium hosts Tampa Bay’s home opener, with both teams looking for their first win. Cleveland faces its second consecutive road game after Jacksonville; the Buccaneers return home from Cincinnati.
I’m backing Tampa Bay because its offensive foundation looks more dependable, and Cleveland’s opening defensive problems give that advantage a path to separation. Mayfield’s 95 passing touchdowns across his first three Tampa Bay seasons matter here: there is an established body of production behind the expectation of better execution. The Buccaneers did not punt against Cincinnati, with Egbuka contributing 63 receiving yards and Irving supplying 93 yards from scrimmage. Four lost fumbles repeatedly interrupted an offense that otherwise kept moving.
Cleveland’s defense presents the opportunity to turn those possessions into a covering performance. It allowed four passing touchdowns at Jacksonville and a 59.1% early-down success rate. That is one game, not an established identity, but the failures occurred while Jacksonville was building its lead. Cleveland now needs to disrupt Mayfield and contain his receiving options after generating only one sack in its opener.
The other half of the bet is Cleveland’s ability to answer. Watson’s final passing line looks respectable, but the Browns managed only 95 net yards and five first downs before halftime. Boston’s late touchdown improved the totals after the game had gotten away. Protection failures, penalties and problems getting the offense organized were overlapping issues. The starting offensive line carries over this week, so I’m judging the unit that actually played rather than adding an unsupported injury downgrade.
There is a legitimate argument for taking the points: both offenses averaged 5.55 yards per play, Cleveland had the better early-down success rate, and Tampa Bay’s pass rush also produced only one sack. Those facts make this a moderate-confidence spread bet. My judgment is that Mayfield and his available supporting cast are better positioned to sustain scoring than Cleveland is to correct its offensive operation and pass defense together. Tampa Bay still has to protect the ball; another turnover-heavy performance could undo the advantage.

The research

QUARTERBACK
Deshaun Watson is the projected starting quarterback for CLE
9.32 Y/AIn his first 2026 game, Deshaun Watson threw for 205 passing yards, completed 72.7% of his passes and averaged 9.32 yards per attempt. His 1-1 touchdown-to-interception line comes from a one-game sample, so the relationship between completion rate and per-throw production is still an early read.
Baker Mayfield is the projected starting quarterback for TB

Props on this game
4- GARY'S PICKBUCKY IRVINGRECEPTIONS OVER 2.5
I'm taking over 2.5 receptions at +106. Irving caught all seven of his targets in Week 1, and Mayfield repeatedly used him as the outlet while facing pressure.
Cleveland still has disruptive front-seven talent, so three short catches is attainable even if Tampa Bay plays from ahead. The strongest counter is that Irving cleared this number in only five of nine games from his 2025 sample, and an 8.5-point favorite could lean more heavily on the conventional running game.
That keeps this from being a high-confidence play, but the plus price is attractive for a lead back coming off seven receptions.
- GARY'S PICKBAKER MAYFIELDRUSHING YARDS OVER 16.5
I'm taking over 16.5 rushing yards at -112. Mayfield ran five times for 30 yards in the opener and cleared this line in six of his eight listed 2025 games, averaging 28 rushing yards across that span.
With Jared Verse and Cleveland's front capable of collapsing the pocket, Mayfield's willingness to escape gives him several paths to reach a modest number. The strongest counter is the expected game script: Tampa Bay is favored by 8.5 points, and a cleaner performance could let Mayfield operate without scrambling nearly as often.
Cleveland also generated only one sack and two quarterback hits in Week 1, so the pressure case is not yet confirmed this season.
- THE LONG SHOTBUCKY IRVINGANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I'm taking Irving to score an anytime touchdown at -105. He handled 15 touches, produced 93 scrimmage yards and scored from 10 yards out in Week 1.
Tampa Bay moved the ball without punting, and as an 8.5-point home favorite it should give its lead back multiple opportunities near the goal line. The strongest counter is Irving's limited rushing volume: he received only eight carries in the opener, while Kenny Gainwell had five.
Cleveland also did not allow a rushing touchdown in Week 1. At nearly even money, I still want the player with Tampa Bay's clearest combination of rushing and receiving touchdown paths.
- THE LONG SHOTEMEKA EGBUKAANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I'm taking Egbuka to score an anytime touchdown at +185. He led Tampa Bay with 63 receiving yards on five catches in the opener and drew six targets.
Cleveland surrendered four passing touchdowns and a 150.6 opponent passer rating in Week 1, while Jalen McMillan is expected to return in a limited role. That leaves Egbuka positioned as one of Mayfield's primary full-time receiving options.
The strongest counter is sample volatility: Cleveland's defensive numbers come from one game, its 2025 defense ranked third against the pass by yardage, and Egbuka did not score on his six opening-week targets. This is a smaller-conviction play, but the matchup and +185 return justify the card.
