The read
Houston hosts Cincinnati with both teams coming off openers decided late. The Texans are looking for their first win; the Bengals are taking their first road trip.
Cincinnati’s combination of pass protection and available receiving options gets me to the points. Joe Burrow took one sack in the opener, and the Bengals allowed quarterback hits on 16.2% of dropbacks versus Houston’s 21.4%. Mike Gesicki and Tee Higgins produced even with Ja’Marr Chase catching only two passes for 12 yards. Cincinnati has multiple ways to move the ball without needing a dramatic Chase rebound to make the offense functional.
Houston’s situation has changed since scoring 31 against Buffalo. Nico Collins is OUT with a FRESH absence, and his seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown were part of that performance. C.J. Stroud completed passes to 11 players, so there is evidence Houston can distribute the work. But spreading opportunities around does not guarantee replacing Collins’ production. Against a Cincinnati defense that recorded four sacks, that new absence strengthens the Bengals’ case.
The strongest objection is Cincinnati’s dependence on takeaways last week. Four turnovers helped produce 24 points, and Tampa Bay never punted. I’m not projecting that recovery haul again. Houston also brings a defense that allowed 17.4 points per game in 2025; one poor outing against Buffalo does not erase that foundation.
That balance makes the spread my choice over Cincinnati’s moneyline. The protection and personnel matchup give the Bengals a credible chance to win, while Houston’s defensive pedigree and Stroud’s distribution keep a narrow defeat firmly in play. At +2.5 (-105), Cincinnati can lose by one or two and still cash. That protection is worth taking here.

QUARTERBACK
C.J. Stroud is the projected starting quarterback for HOU
7.21 Y/AIn his first 2026 game, C.J. Stroud threw for 274 passing yards, completed 68.4% of his passes and averaged 7.21 yards per attempt. His 2-0 touchdown-to-interception line comes from a one-game sample, so the relationship between completion rate and per-throw production is still an early read.
Joe Burrow is the projected starting quarterback for CIN

Props on this game
4- GARY'S PICKCHASE BROWNRECEIVING YARDS OVER 19.5
I’m betting Brown over 19.5 receiving yards at -113. He caught five passes on six targets for 22 yards in Week 1, and he exceeded this line in eight of his final 10 games in 2025 while averaging 34.3 receiving yards over that span. Houston’s edge rush can force Burrow to get the ball out quickly, making Brown’s checkdowns and screens a practical extension of the running game. Houston is also missing linebackers Henry To’oTo’o and Jake Hummel today.
The best case against it is that Cincinnati has several short-area options competing for the same work, including Gesicki and potentially Samaje Perine. Houston’s 2025 defense was excellent overall, and Brown barely cleared this number with 22 yards last week. The repeatable receiving role matters more to me than that narrow Week 1 margin.
- GARY'S PICKMIKE GESICKIRECEIVING YARDS OVER 24.5
I’m taking Gesicki over 24.5 receiving yards at -105. He drew seven targets and produced 78 yards in the opener, and Houston just allowed Dalton Kincaid to turn five catches into 130 yards. With the Texans focused on Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins outside, Gesicki gives Joe Burrow a favorable answer in the intermediate spaces. Burrow has specifically praised Gesicki’s ability to find openings in coverage.
The strongest concern is role stability: Gesicki played only 33% of Cincinnati’s offensive snaps in Week 1, and his seven-target game is a one-game 2026 sample. He also cleared this number in only four of his final 10 games in 2025. Still, the matchup and price are strong enough at a modest 25-yard threshold.
- THE LONG SHOTDAVID MONTGOMERYANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m taking Montgomery to score a touchdown at -135. His Houston debut established the role clearly: 20 carries, three receptions and three touchdowns, including two scores on the ground. The Texans used him in short yardage and near the goal line, and Houston is favored by 2.5 points at home, which supports another game with usable scoring opportunities. Nico Collins being out also gives Houston another reason to finish drives through Montgomery.
The strongest counter is Cincinnati’s rebuilt defensive front. Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen and a deep rotation held Tampa Bay to 89 rushing yards, while Woody Marks handled nine carries and can reduce Montgomery’s total opportunities. Three touchdowns in one game are not a sustainable expectation, but I only need one from the back Houston has already trusted around the goal line.
- THE LONG SHOTJA'MARR CHASEANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
I’m betting Chase to score at +130. He received only four targets and finished with two catches for 12 yards in Week 1, after which Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati staff publicly emphasized that they have to manufacture more touches for him. Houston allowed five completions of at least 30 yards against Buffalo, and Chase has already shown he can break this matchup open: he posted 124 yards with a 64-yard touchdown in the teams’ 2023 meeting. Increased volume gives him multiple paths to score rather than requiring one specific red-zone call.
The strongest objection is Derek Stingley Jr., an elite corner with the size and ball skills to contest Chase directly. Burrow is also playing through a back issue, and Cincinnati can redirect scoring chances toward Tee Higgins, Mike Gesicki or Chase Brown if Houston tilts coverage toward No. 1. That keeps my confidence measured, but plus money is worth taking on the expected usage correction.
