The read
Orchard Park opens a $2.1 billion building on a Thursday night, Bruce Smith gets the ceremony, and two of the three highest-scoring offenses in the league over the last 50 games walk in on four days' rest. The number has drifted from a field goal and a hook to nearly a touchdown since Sunday night. I'm taking the points.
The move tells you what the market is paying for. Detroit lost Christian Mahogany and Blake Miller during Sunday's game, both are out tonight, and Larry Borom draws Greg Rousseau after Rousseau posted two sacks and two forced fumbles in Houston. That is real, and it is why this is 5.5 and not 3.5. But it is also the whole Buffalo case, and it is now in the price.
What isn't in the price is how Detroit's one true strength lines up against Buffalo's one true weakness. Jahmyr Gibbs carried 29 times for 156 yards and two scores on Sunday and touched the ball 34 times. Buffalo allowed 136.2 rushing yards per game last season, 28th in the league, gave up 124 to Houston, and was gashed at 5.9 per carry before halftime. Detroit ran 73 plays against New Orleans, converted four of five red-zone trips, and held Jared Goff to a 22 percent pressure rate, second lowest in the league, mostly after Mahogany had already left. That is a ball-control offense against a run defense that has not proven it can get off the field, and it is exactly the profile that keeps a plus-5.5 ticket alive deep into the fourth quarter.
Buffalo's defense is a new scheme and it looked like one. Houston ran 73 plays, held the ball for nearly 13 more minutes, converted 7 of 16 third downs, and rolled up 398 yards. Jim Leonhard called it a lot of ugly, said his players looked around unsure of the answer when things unraveled, and flagged crowd noise in his own building as a communication problem. This unit sat in zone on 81 percent of snaps. Amon-Ra St. Brown finished third in the NFL in yards against zone in each of the last two seasons and just caught 10 balls with two touchdowns.
Then there is how Buffalo actually won. It trailed 31-30 with 3:13 left, took over at its own 4, had James Cook fumble and its own guard recover, saw the go-ahead throw nearly intercepted on the previous snap, and needed a strip-sack with 10 seconds left to survive a defense that led the league in yards allowed last year. Its inside run game succeeded on a third of its snaps and it went 1 of 3 in the red zone. Josh Allen was brilliant, 334 yards and five completions of 30-plus, and he will get his shots against a Detroit secondary that just gave up 410 to a rookie. That is the risk I'm accepting, and it is the reason this is a spread ticket and not a moneyline.
The rest of the game favors the team getting points. Aidan Hutchinson had two sacks and ten pressures against a line that just allowed two sacks, Detroit's front produced five sacks and nine hits, and both teams score at a rate where a 5.5-point margin gets covered by one possession swinging either way. I'll take the offense built to shorten this game and the cushion that comes with it.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
QUARTERBACK
BUF's passing game is +119 yards per game
119 YPGThrough 2026-09-16, BUF averages 323 team passing yards per game to DET’s 204 in current-2026 results, a +119 YPG gap. That creates a clear contrast with DET’s identity in this matchup, though both passing samples cover only 1 game.
BUF averages +5.3 yards every time it drops back
5.3 Y/AThrough 2026-09-16, BUF averages 10.4 yards per pass attempt to DET’s 5.1 in current-2026 results, a +5.3 Y/A gap. BUF’s passing game has generated much more per attempt, though the comparison covers only 1 game for each team.
Jared Goff starts at quarterback for DET
5.28 Y/AJared Goff has 206 passing yards, 66.7% completions and 5.28 yards per attempt with a 2-0 TD-INT line through one 2026 game. The 2-0 line shows early ball security, but attempt volume and Buffalo defensive context are not supplied for tonight’s DET @ BUF test.
Josh Allen starts at quarterback for BUF
11.52 Y/AJosh Allen has 334 passing yards, 69% completions and 11.52 yards per attempt with a 2-0 TD-INT line through one 2026 game. That opening line pairs high efficiency with ball security, though attempt volume and Detroit defensive context are not supplied for tonight’s DET @ BUF test.
TRENCHES
DET's front holds runners to 33 fewer yards per game
33 YPGThrough 2026-09-16, DET allowed 91 rushing yards per game over 1 game, 33 fewer than BUF’s 124 over 1 game. The supplied facts do not describe the opposing rushing attacks or game scripts, limiting what the gap says about DET @ BUF.
PASS RUSH
DET's rush gets home 2 more times per game
2 SACKSThrough 2026-09-16, DET recorded 5 sacks per game over 1 game, 2 more than BUF’s 3 over 1 game. The one-game figures do not include opponent or offensive-style context for DET @ BUF.
PACE & SCRIPT
DET runs +21 more plays per game
21 PLAYSIn current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-16, DET averages 73 offensive plays per game to BUF’s 52, a +21-play gap. DET has carried the higher-volume offensive profile, but 1 game cannot show whether either pace will persist.
DET holds the ball 13:08 longer per game
13:08 TOPThrough 2026-09-16, DET averages 36:51 time of possession per game to BUF’s 23:43 in current-2026 results, a 13:08 TOP advantage. That points to contrasting possession profiles entering the matchup, but each is based on only 1 game.
BUF is scoring +5 points per game
5 PPGDET is at 31 points per game over 1 game; BUF is at 36 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-16.
TURNOVERS
BUF commits 1 fewer turnovers per game
1 TOThrough 2026-09-16, BUF committed 0 turnovers over 1 current-2026 game, 1 fewer per game than DET’s 1. That gave BUF the early ball-security edge, but a one-game sample offers little basis for treating it as a stable difference.
BUF puts 1 fewer fumbles on the ground per game
1 FUMDET is at 1 fumbles lost per game over 1 game; BUF is at 0 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-16.
DET's defense takes the ball away 1 more time per game
1 TOThrough 2026-09-16, DET produced 3 takeaways per game over 1 game, 1 more than BUF’s 2 over 1 game. Without opponent or game-script context, the comparison cannot show whether either defense was protected by its matchup.
EXPLOSIVE PLAYS
BUF owns a +2.8 yards-per-play gap
2.8 Y/PThrough 2026-09-16, BUF averaged 7.9 yards per play over 1 current-2026 game, 2.8 Y/P above DET’s 5.1. That separates BUF in early per-play efficiency, but one game does not show whether that gap will persist.
RED ZONE
DET's red-zone scoring rate is 46.7 percentage points higher
46.7 PPThrough 2026-09-16, DET scored on 80% of red-zone chances over 1 current-2026 game, 46.7 percentage points above BUF’s 33.3%. The number of red-zone opportunities is not supplied, making this one-game finishing gap especially fragile.
DET gets inside the 20 2 more times per game
2 TRIPSDET is at 5 red-zone trips per game over 1 game; BUF is at 3 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-16.
COACHING
DET gives away 24 fewer penalty yards per game
24 YDSDET is at 61 penalty yards per game over 1 game; BUF is at 85 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-16.
MISMATCH
BUF's explosiveness against DET's — 7.9 yards a snap to 5.1
7.9 VS 5.1Buffalo averaged 7.9 yards per play over one game, compared with Detroit’s 5.1 over one game—the widest supplied gap in this matchup. No defensive measurement is provided to show how either side can exploit or hide that difference.
COVERAGE
BUF's secondary gives up 121 fewer passing yards per game
121 YPGThrough 2026-09-16, BUF allowed 257 passing yards per game over 1 game, 121 fewer than DET’s 378 over 1 game. The supplied facts do not show who they faced or how those offenses attacked, so schedule and script cannot be assessed.
REPLACEMENT
D.J. Reed (CB) is questionable for DET
QUESTIONABLED.J. Reed’s questionable designation for Thursday leaves his availability unresolved this close to kickoff. If the cornerback sits, Detroit’s defense is affected, but no replacement is identified.
Isiah Pacheco (RB) is on injured reserve for DET
IRIsiah Pacheco is on injured reserve after back surgery Monday and is expected to miss significant time, so Detroit’s offense must redistribute his work against Buffalo. The facts do not identify who absorbs it.
Terrel Bernard (LB) is questionable for BUF
QUESTIONABLETerrel Bernard was limited in Tuesday’s practice with a calf issue and is questionable against Detroit. His availability remains unresolved, and the facts do not identify who would absorb his work in Buffalo’s defense.
Christian Izien (S) is questionable for DET
QUESTIONABLEChristian Izien’s report conflicts, listing the safety as both questionable and out on Sep. 14. That leaves his status—and who would replace him in Detroit’s defense—unclear.

Props on this game
4- GARY'S PICKJOSH ALLENPASSING YARDS OVER 250.5
Allen gets the exact matchup I want for a passing over. Detroit surrendered 410 passing yards and six completions of at least 20 yards in its opener, while Allen answered with 334 yards and a career-high five completions of 30-plus yards.
Buffalo's conventional running game produced only 63 yards, giving Allen another reason to attack a secondary still missing Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. The strongest counter is the larger sample: Allen averaged 227.1 passing yards across his final 10 games of 2025 and cleared this number six times.
Aidan Hutchinson also generated four quarterback hits in Week 1. Even so, this line does not fully reflect how cleanly Allen's downfield approach matches Detroit's biggest defensive weakness.
- GARY'S PICKJAMESON WILLIAMSRECEIVING YARDS OVER 57.5
Williams cleared 57.5 receiving yards in eight of his final 10 games in 2025, averaging 82.8 over that stretch, and his nine targets in the opener confirm that his vertical role remains intact. Buffalo's new defense allowed Houston to sustain drives, convert seven third downs and score on four of five red-zone trips.
If Buffalo scores as expected, Detroit will need Williams stretching the field instead of living entirely through Gibbs. The strongest contrary evidence is immediate: Williams caught only four of those nine Week 1 targets for 45 yards, dropped three catchable passes and lost a fumble.
Detroit's two fresh offensive-line absences could also shorten Goff's throwing clock. I am betting that the opportunity and established explosive production outweigh one sloppy opener.
- THE LONG SHOTAMON-RA ST. BROWNANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
St. Brown drew 14 targets and scored twice in Detroit's opener, including the overtime winner. That is the clearest possible evidence of his role when Goff needs a completion near the goal line.
Buffalo allowed touchdowns on four of Houston's five red-zone possessions, and Detroit also converted four of five red-zone trips, so plus money on Goff's most trusted receiver is attractive. The strongest counter is touchdown variance and the crowded distribution: Gibbs scored twice last week, while LaPorta and Williams also command meaningful targets. This is only one game of 2026 evidence, and St.
Brown's 67 yards show that volume does not guarantee explosive production. I still want the price on the player Detroit targeted 14 times and twice finished drives through.
- THE LONG SHOTDJ MOOREANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
Moore immediately operated as Buffalo's lead wideout, drawing eight targets and turning them into five catches, 100 yards and a touchdown. He ran a route on 81% of Allen's pass plays and commanded nearly a third of the targets on those routes.
That role meets a Detroit secondary that just allowed 410 passing yards and six gains of at least 20 yards, making Moore a strong candidate to finish one of Allen's downfield shots. The strongest contrary evidence is his 2025 form: he cleared 62.5 receiving yards only four times in his final 10 games and scored just once in this new Buffalo offense's one-game sample.
Kincaid, Palmer, Allen's legs and the running backs create substantial touchdown competition. At +155, however, Moore's usage and this matchup give me enough room to take the variance.
