The read
Arrowhead hosts the Monday-night opener, with Denver beginning its division-title defense and Kansas City trying to turn the page on a losing season. The standings reset tonight; this is an immediate test of how both teams have changed.
I favor Denver’s combination of protection and defensive pressure. Last regular season, Denver allowed 23 sacks against Kansas City’s 47, while the Broncos led the league in sacks for a second consecutive season. Those results establish the matchup’s starting point. Kansas City’s starting left tackle was ruled out September 12, leaving an undrafted rookie expected to make his first career start. My judgment is that Denver has the better opportunity to disrupt possessions without exposing its own offense to the same degree of disruption.
Denver also has a way to make Kansas City defend more of the field. Jaylen Waddle joins Courtland Sutton after producing 910 receiving yards last season with Miami. His production does not automatically transfer, but his arrival gives Denver another receiving threat against a reconstructed secondary now missing Chamarri Conner, also ruled out September 12. J.K. Dobbins’ prior-season production—5.0 yards per carry on 153 attempts—supports a complementary rushing option. Denver’s path runs through sustained offense as well as sacks.
Kansas City’s strongest answer is Kenneth Walker III. He produced 10 runs of at least 20 yards last season with Seattle; Kansas City’s entire offense managed only three. If Walker creates manageable downs, Patrick Mahomes can use the quick passing game and reduce Denver’s opportunities to rush. That is the biggest obstacle to this ticket. On the other side, Kansas City’s disguised pressures and Arrowhead’s noise present a substantial test for Denver’s new play-caller.
I give Denver the edge because its protection, pass rush and expanded receiving options offer several ways to compete throughout the game. Last season’s opposite extremes in close finishes temper that conviction: Denver’s 11–2 one-possession record and Kansas City’s 1–9 mark cannot tell us who executes late tonight. Kansas City has a credible winning path, which is why I prefer the points to Denver’s moneyline. The +2.5 covers a broader set of competitive outcomes, although a Chiefs win by a field goal would beat this ticket.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
QUARTERBACK
Bo Nix starts at quarterback for DEN
6.42 Y/ABo Nix threw for 3,931 yards over 17 games in 2025, completing 63.4% at 6.42 yards per attempt with a 25-11 TD-INT line. No KC defensive measure is supplied to define tonight’s test for that profile.
Patrick Mahomes starts at quarterback for KC
7.14 Y/APatrick Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards over 14 games in 2025, completing 62.7% at 7.14 yards per attempt with a 22-11 TD-INT line. No DEN defensive measure is supplied to define tonight’s test for that profile.
PASS RUSH
DEN's offense takes 1.17 fewer sacks per game (2025 season)
1.17 SACKSDEN took 1.77 sacks per game over 17 games in the 2025 regular season, versus KC’s 2.94. That gap points to different levels of drive disruption, but neither club has a 2026 final yet.
DEN's pocket leaks 9.7 fewer yards per game (2025 season)
9.7 YDSDEN lost 9.5 yards per game on sacks over 17 games in the 2025 regular season, while KC lost 19.3. That contrast shows Denver surrendered less field position this way, but neither club has a 2026 final yet.
COACHING
KC's staff goes for it 0.71 more times per game on fourth down (2025 season)
0.71 ATT/GKC attempted 1.88 fourth-down conversions per game over 17 games in the 2025 regular season, versus DEN’s 1.18. KC’s higher attempt rate reflects a more frequent willingness to keep drives in the offense’s hands; neither club has a 2026 final yet.
MISMATCH
DEN's protection against a KC front — KC takes 2.94 sacks a game to DEN's 1.77 (2025 season)
1.77 VS 2.94DEN took 1.77 sacks per game over 17 games in the 2025 regular season, compared with KC’s 2.94 over 17 games. That shows a protection gap between the offenses, but does not measure how KC’s front attacks DEN.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
DEN lead the series with KC since 2025
2-0 SERIESDEN has won both meetings with KC since 2025, taking a 2-0 series lead. The Broncos won 22-19 at home on Nov. 16, 2025, then 20-13 at Kansas City on Dec. 25, 2025.
REPLACEMENT
Garrett Nussmeier (QB) is inactive for KC

Sam Ehlinger (QB) is inactive for DEN
INACTIVESam Ehlinger is inactive by coach’s decision for Denver at Kansas City, so this affects the Broncos’ quarterback depth. The facts do not identify who absorbs any work.
Jimmy Holiday (WR) is on injured reserve for KC
IRThe Aug. 31 report says Jimmy Holiday was placed on Kansas City’s injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, keeping the wide receiver out against Denver. The facts do not identify who absorbs any receiving work.
Jeff Caldwell (WR) is on injured reserve for KC
IRThe Aug. 25 report says Jeff Caldwell reverted to Kansas City’s injured reserve with a knee injury, keeping the wide receiver out against Denver. The facts do not identify who absorbs any receiving work.

4- GARY'S PICKPATRICK MAHOMESPASSING YARDS UNDER 223.5
Mahomes hasn't taken a real hit in nine months and didn't play a single preseason snap rehabbing that torn ACL. He's making his return behind an offensive line that just lost its blindside protector — Josh Simmons was ruled out two days ago — which hands the left tackle job to an undrafted rookie making his first career start at a position he barely played in college.
That's exactly why Kansas City went out and paid for Kenneth Walker: to give this offense a run-first identity and keep some of the pressure off a rusty quarterback and a patchwork line. Vance Joseph's defense has had this matchup solved for a while regardless — three touchdown passes against four interceptions, an 81.6 rating and 12 sacks combined across the last four meetings, with Kansas City averaging under 16 points in that stretch.
A returning quarterback, a rookie protecting his blind side, and a play-caller with every incentive to lean on the run and the short game rather than push the ball downfield adds up to a quieter yardage total than his career numbers suggest.
- GARY'S PICKBO NIXPASSING YARDS OVER 227.5
Nix has a real history against this opponent — 73 percent completion, a 4-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a 93.8 rating across two trips to Arrowhead. He gets to test a rebuilt Chiefs secondary with a genuinely upgraded arsenal behind him.
Denver gave up three draft picks for Jaylen Waddle, who broke off a 35-yard catch-and-run the one time he saw the field this preseason, and Courtland Sutton is still there as the primary possession threat. Kansas City already traded away Trent McDuffie and lost two more starters in free agency, then ruled out starting safety Chamarri Conner two days ago.
That's a rookie sixth overall pick and a new safety learning the defense on the fly against three real weapons in a building that's given Nix trouble before — just not this time. He only played two drives this preseason, so there's rust to burn off, but this is the version of Nix that's shown up big here already, throwing at a defense with more holes than the one he beat last December.
- THE LONG SHOTCOURTLAND SUTTONANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
Sutton caught seven touchdowns last season as Denver's go-to red-zone target, and tonight he's facing a Chiefs secondary that looks nothing like the one that lined up against him in December. Kansas City traded away Trent McDuffie, lost Jaylen Watson and Bryan Cook in free agency, and just ruled out starting safety Chamarri Conner two days out from kickoff. That leaves a rookie sixth overall pick and a new free-agent safety sorting out assignments in real time against a receiver who already has size, contested-catch chemistry and a proven role with Nix in the scoring zone. Plus-money on an established red-zone target facing a defensive backfield that's still introducing itself is a price worth taking.
- THE LONG SHOTKENNETH WALKER IIIANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
Kansas City didn't hand a big free-agent deal to the reigning Super Bowl MVP to split him into a committee. Andy Reid's staff has talked all camp about getting back to a run-first approach, and Walker is why — a contact-balance, home-run threat who piled up over 400 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns during Seattle's championship run. With Mahomes making his first start in nine months behind a line now without Josh Simmons, feeding Walker inside the ten and letting him finish drives is the obvious way to protect the quarterback and shorten the game. He's the new focal point of this offense in the exact spot where Kansas City has every reason to keep it on the ground.
