The read
Two defending division champions open their seasons Sunday afternoon in Charlotte. Both spent the offseason emphasizing faster starts; now that work gets its first regular-season test.
I trust Chicago’s returning offense to create scoring opportunities more consistently across the afternoon. Last season, including the playoffs, the Bears produced +0.08 EPA per play on early downs against Carolina’s -0.04. The reason I give that comparison weight here is continuity: Caleb Williams returns under Ben Johnson, with D’Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai and Colston Loveland still providing established options. Carolina begins with Brad Idzik calling regular-season plays for the first time. That change could help, but Chicago has the more demonstrated offensive foundation.
The four-quarter path is sustained possessions that keep putting pressure on Carolina to answer. Chicago converted 42.7% of third downs during the 2025 regular season against Carolina’s 36.1%. Those percentages cannot promise today’s results, but combined with the early-down production and returning offensive personnel, they support my judgment that Chicago can generate the more dependable scoring opportunities.
Carolina’s strongest response is making those possessions difficult and attacking Chicago’s defensive vulnerability to big gains. Its defense allowed an 8.5% explosive-play rate in last season’s sample, compared with Chicago’s 11.6%. Bryce Young and Tetairoa McMillan give the Panthers an established passing connection capable of making that vulnerability matter. That is a credible route to keeping this competitive throughout the afternoon.
I also expect less separation from turnovers than last year’s totals might suggest. Chicago’s +22 margin against Carolina’s -2 came with sharply different own-fumble recovery outcomes, and Chicago has changed personnel among its takeaway producers. Another overwhelming turnover advantage should not be required for this ticket to work.
That combination leads me to the moneyline. Chicago’s offensive continuity and possession-to-possession production give me the stronger case for the winner. Carolina’s defensive resistance and Chicago’s susceptibility to explosive plays make paying -168 a better fit for that conviction than laying the field goal.

Props on this game
4- GARY'S PICKCALEB WILLIAMSPASSING ATTEMPTS OVER 31.5
Chicago built this offense to stay aggressive, and Williams averaged 34.5 attempts last season. Carolina's improved defense should create enough resistance to keep the Bears throwing well into the second half.
- GARY'S PICKKYLE MONANGAIRUSHING ATTEMPTS OVER 7.5
Monangai averaged 12.7 carries last season and cleared this number in eight of his last 10 games. Chicago has been comfortable using him alongside Swift, and his physical running style should earn a steady workload from the opening drive.
- THE LONG SHOTD'ANDRE SWIFTANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
Swift remains Chicago's most established scoring back after reaching the end zone 10 times last season. The Bears' two-back attack should create multiple chances near the goal line, and Swift's receiving role gives him another path to cash this.
- THE LONG SHOTTETAIROA MCMILLANANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
McMillan is Carolina's featured boundary weapon after a 1,014-yard rookie season. Chicago's rebuilt secondary will have to deal with his size and red-zone role all afternoon, and this price is worth taking on the Panthers' best touchdown threat.
