The read

Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium opens a new chapter for Buffalo, with Joe Brady making his head-coaching debut. Houston begins another season under DeMeco Ryans.

Houston’s returning defense is the foundation of my bet. Opponents had a 37.5% success rate against the Texans last season, compared with 42.9% against Buffalo. The previous meeting showed how that resistance could affect this particular offense: eight sacks and two interceptions of Josh Allen. The exact sack total is an extreme result, but the matchup behind it matters. Houston disrupted Buffalo’s protection while mostly rushing four defenders. With its defensive core returning, I expect Houston to make sustaining possessions difficult again.

Houston’s offensive opportunity is on the ground. Buffalo allowed 5.1 yards per carry last season, and David Montgomery and Woody Marks give the Texans a way to test that vulnerability. My read is that Houston can sustain enough rushing production to give C.J. Stroud manageable passing situations and keep the offense contributing throughout the game. That requires Houston’s rebuilt line to perform; Jim Leonhard’s arrival also means Buffalo’s defensive problems cannot simply be assumed to repeat unchanged.

Buffalo’s strongest counter is James Cook III. He gained 116 rushing yards in the previous meeting, with half coming on two carries—a reminder that Houston can defend many snaps successfully and still concede game-changing gains. Buffalo also had the more efficient offense last season. If Cook keeps the Bills ahead of the chains and Allen finishes those possessions, Houston’s pass rush gets fewer opportunities to determine the game. That is the clearest threat to this ticket, especially if Houston’s blocking leaves Stroud having to carry the offense.

I give Houston’s defensive continuity and its opportunity against Buffalo’s run defense the greater weight. I expect that combination to produce enough stops and sustained possessions to finish ahead. That makes this an outright-win bet: Houston +100, instead of paying -115 for the +1.5 cushion.

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • C.J. Stroud starts at quarterback for HOU

    7.19 Y/A

    Stroud's 2025 season line: 3041 passing yards, 64.5% completions, 7.19 yards per attempt, 19-8 TD-INT over 14 games.

BUF produced 50.7 more rushing yards per game in the 2025 regular season, averaging 159.6 over 17 games versus HOU’s 108.9 over 17. BUF brings the stronger ground-production profile, but these offensive totals alone cannot show which side dictates the matchup.

  • BUF gets +1.04 more yards a carry (2025 season)

    1.04 Y/C

BUF is at 4.97 yards per rush attempt over 17 games; HOU is at 3.94 over 17 games. Those are 2025 regular-season team-game results; the 2026 season has no finals for these clubs yet.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • BUF @ HOU carries a 67.5 market total

    67.5

BUF-HOU’s 67.5 total sits 20 points above the 47.5 median across 13 games with posted totals, establishing one of the slate’s strongest high-scoring expectations. That view breaks if scoring is substantially more restrained than the total implies.

  • BUF is scoring +4.5 points per game (2025 season)

    4.5 PPG

BUF is at 28.3 points per game over 17 games; HOU is at 23.8 over 17 games. Those are 2025 regular-season team-game results; the 2026 season has no finals for these clubs yet.

COACHING

  • BUF's staff goes for it 0.76 more times per game on fourth down (2025 season)

    0.76 ATT/G

BUF is at 1.88 fourth-down attempts per game over 17 games; HOU is at 1.12 over 17 games. Those are 2025 regular-season team-game results; the 2026 season has no finals for these clubs yet.

MISMATCH

  • BUF's ground game against HOU's — 159.6 rush yards a game to 108.9 (2025 season)

    159.6 VS 108.9

Buffalo averaged 159.6 rushing yards per game over 17 games in the 2025 regular season; Houston averaged 108.9 over 17. The comparison measures two offenses, so it does not establish how Buffalo’s ground game matches Houston’s defense.

    NFLHouston Texans· -113

    Woody Marks
    Rushing Yards over 25.5

    -113 · CASHED · ACTUAL 42

    Houston Texans

Marks has already shown he can create yards when the blocking is imperfect, and Houston wants him involved as more than a change-of-pace back. With Buffalo’s run defense coming off a rough season, 26 rushing yards is a modest bar for a player expected to handle meaningful work.

  • GARY'S PICK
    DALTON SCHULTZRECEPTIONS OVER 3.5
    NFLHouston Texans· -105

    Dalton Schultz
    Receptions over 3.5

    -105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Houston Texans

Schultz is a natural outlet for C.J. Stroud against Buffalo’s pressure. Houston rebuilt its offensive line, but the safest way to keep Stroud on schedule is to use the tight end underneath. Schultz’s steady target role gives him a strong chance to reach four catches.

    James Cook III
    Anytime TD over 0.5

    +105 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Buffalo Bills

Cook is the engine of Buffalo’s offense after leading the league in rushing last season. Houston’s pass rush will make the Bills eager to stay balanced, and Cook’s explosiveness gives him multiple paths to the end zone. At plus money, I’m willing to back him to finish a drive.

  • THE LONG SHOT
    DAVID MONTGOMERYANYTIME TD OVER 0.5
    NFLHouston Texans· +105

    David Montgomery
    Anytime TD over 0.5

    +105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 3

    Houston Texans

Montgomery gives Houston the physical presence it has wanted in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Buffalo struggled badly against the run last season, and the Texans should be comfortable leaning on their backs near the goal line. His workload may be shared, but his role is built for this price.
