Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit on the call in Cleveland for a Thursday night preseason finale, and the headline is who won't be out there. Todd Monken said he spoke with Mike Vrabel ahead of tonight and the two coaches agreed neither club would play its starters. Drake Maye stays in a baseball cap for the fourth straight exhibition. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, three days removed from Monken naming Watson the Week 1 starter, are both expected to watch. What's left is a 53-man cut line four days away and about a hundred men playing for jobs — not just here, but for the other 31 buildings watching the tape.

I'm taking the points, and the first reason is the simplest one: 2.5 is a real number to lay in a game neither coaching staff is trying to win. Preseason home field barely exists when the playing-time script is pre-agreed, so a road favorite at this price is the market asserting it can rank two bubble rosters to better than a field goal. I don't think that's knowable tonight, and the hook works entirely in Cleveland's direction. The Browns cash on an outright win, a one-point loss, a two-point loss — and on a tie. That last one isn't a novelty in August. New England already played to a 13-13 tie with Indianapolis this preseason. Four live outcomes against one for the favorite, and the plus side is the cheaper ticket at -105 versus -115.

The second reason is what the Patriots' reserve group has actually produced when I look at all of it instead of the best of it. Tommy DeVito's Philadelphia game was the highlight — 8-of-15 for 151 yards and a touchdown, with Behren Morton throwing the winner late. But that same personnel pool tied the Colts 13-13 despite the defense forcing four turnovers, then turned in a 23-6 loss to Las Vegas in its most recent outing. Thirteen, twenty-four, six. That's not a group I trust to deliver a clean three-point margin on demand; that's a group whose range is wide and whose bottom is very low. New England has also released 21 players and moved Kayshon Boutte out this week — the roster is thinner and more churned than it was when the Eagles tape was made, and tonight is its fourth exhibition against Cleveland's third.

I want to be straight about the strongest argument on the other side, because it's a good one. Cleveland scored 17 points across two preseason games while getting outscored 65-17, and it scored those 17 with Watson and Sanders taking the snaps — both of whom sit tonight. The stretches that most resemble this game are the ugly ones: Chicago running off 34 unanswered after falling behind 10-0, Buffalo shutting the Browns out after halftime. That's a genuine reserve-phase warning. What softens it for me is that neither of the departing quarterbacks was playing well — Watson 16-of-27 with no touchdowns and a pick, Sanders 15-of-22 with one touchdown and two picks across the two games. Cleveland isn't stepping down from something efficient. It's handing the offense to Dillon Gabriel, a quarterback with regular-season starting experience whom Monken explicitly said he wants to see more of, plus rookie Taylen Green getting his first NFL action. That's an unknown replacing a known negative, and unknowns get priced worse than they deserve in cut week.

The honest shape of this one is a coin flip between two backup rosters with a field goal's worth of tax attached to the wrong side of it. Cleveland is home, on a defined plan to play its quarterbacks deep into the night, and it doesn't have to win — it has to lose small, or not lose at all. I'll take the four doors over the one.
