Las Vegas Raiders at Houston Texans

Preseason football takes center stage under the lights in Houston, where the Texans and Raiders turn a week of joint work into a live evaluation. With both coaching staffs protecting major regular-season pieces, this number comes down to which depth plan I trust more for four quarters.

That points me toward Las Vegas. Fernando Mendoza has a clearly defined assignment: start and handle the entire first half after throwing for 97 yards and a touchdown in the opener. Houston gets C.J. Stroud back, but DeMeco Ryans has already said Tuesday’s joint practice supplied the first team with the work it needed and that depth players will carry the game. Stroud’s presence gives Houston some early upside, yet I’m reluctant to lay points based on a starter whose workload may be brief. The Raiders showed more production from their quarterback rotation in Week 1, while Houston’s offense managed only seven points with Davis Mills throwing for 82 yards. Those results are not predictive by themselves, but they matter when tonight will again be driven primarily by reserve units.

There are legitimate reasons to respect Houston. Its defensive front troubled Las Vegas during the joint practice, and the Raiders’ eight penalties for 75 yards in their opener are exactly the kind of self-inflicted damage that can wreck a preseason ticket. The counterweight is that Houston does not plan to give its first-team defense an extended evening, reducing how much I want to project that practice advantage across the full game. My read is that Las Vegas has the more coherent quarterback allocation and stronger continuity for the evaluation portion that will decide this matchup. In a game priced close to even, I want the point and a half with the side whose plan is clearer after the starters leave. I’ll take the Raiders +1.5 at plus money.
