The read

Autzen goes under the lights at 8:00 PM Pacific, and the Ducks come in with the market treating them like damaged goods. Nebraska flies about 1,360 miles on a 5-1 start and a near-upset of Indiana. I'm taking Oregon -6.5.

Start with why the number sits here. Oregon was No. 13 until UCLA left Autzen with a 17-15 win. The Ducks gave it away 7 times, five of them on fumbles, and still lost by only two after being stopped on a tying two-point try. Their defense held UCLA to 17 points and 4-16 on third down. Fumble luck that bad doesn't repeat, and the drop out of the poll hands us Oregon at a discount.

The injury list looks scarier than it plays. Dante Moore, Aaron Flowers and Jeremiah McClellan were already out last week, and Simeon Price and Brayden Platt haven't recorded a stat this season. The real new loss is Evan Stewart, who is doubtful. Quarterback is covered better than at most programs. Dylan Raiola threw for 289 yards and 2 TDs in a 41-27 win at USC, and Brock Thomas went 11-of-15 with no picks in relief against UCLA.

Nebraska's record is mostly empty calories. The wins came against two MAC teams, an FCS team, and Michigan State and Maryland, both 2-5. The one good team on the schedule, Indiana, won in Lincoln. Oregon has already seen four ranked opponents. Nebraska's defense also has a hole in the worst spot. Starting safety Jamir Conn is out against an offense built on play action and RPOs, a week after Indiana hit 12.0 yards per pass attempt with Conn on the field.

The risk is real. Oregon's offense has stalled against good defenses, the receiver room is thin, and Trent Ferguson is out up front. A weak Oregon pass rush (8 sacks) gives Anthony Colandrea time, and Nebraska rarely gives the ball away. The losing script is a grind that Oregon wins by a field goal.

Still, a better team at home, at night, priced off a turnover fluke is the side I want. Ducks by a touchdown or more.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Brock Thomas is ORE's projected starter

    7.40 Y/A

Brock Thomas is ORE's projected starting quarterback. October 16 reporting attributed to Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz says Thomas is expected to start against Nebraska. Oregon had not publicly confirmed its selection. 2026 line: 148 passing yards, 70.0% completions, 7.40 yards per attempt, 1-0 TD-INT over 2 games.

  • Anthony Colandrea is NEB's confirmed starter

    7.55 Y/A

Anthony Colandrea is NEB's confirmed starting quarterback. The October 12 Register-Guard preview specifically identifies Colandrea as Nebraska's established starter entering the October 17 Oregon game. 2026 line: 1404 passing yards, 64.0% completions, 7.55 yards per attempt, 13-3 TD-INT over 6 games.

TURNOVERS

  • NEB: 0.5 turnovers committed per game to ORE's 1.6

    1.1 TO

Nebraska is protecting the ball at 0.5 giveaways a game, better than its 0.85 last season, while Oregon sits at 1.6 over 5 games after just 1 a game last season. Both are short samples, and Oregon's jump is the likelier one to correct. In Eugene, Nebraska's path to staying close is avoiding the short fields that let Oregon pile up points.

MISMATCH

  • NEB: 213.8 rush yards a game to ORE's 137.2

    213.8 VS 137.2

Nebraska runs for 213.8 yards a game over six games, up from 145.9 last season. Oregon has dropped to 137.2 over five after 198.6 a year ago. Both moved sharply, so expect some drift back toward last season on each side. Oregon's rushing could rebound at home, which makes this gap look less settled than the headline suggests.

SITUATIONAL

  • ORE: 312.2 team passing yards per game to NEB's 247.5

    64.7 YPG

Oregon is throwing for 312.2 yards per game over 5 games, up from 253.6 last season, while Nebraska is at 247.5 over 6, a modest rise from 224.6. Both passing games have improved, Oregon by much more. At home, Oregon's air attack is the style likely to set the pace, which pushes Nebraska to answer through the air rather than grind.

TEAM RECORD

  • Big Ten game: NEB 2-1, ORE 1-1 in conference

    CONFERENCE

These two share the Big Ten. NEB is 2-1 against it, ORE is 1-1. 2026 standings through 2026-10-17.
