The read
Austin Simmons returns to Oxford on Saturday afternoon, this time leading No. 13 Missouri against the Ole Miss program that handed the offense to Trinidad Chambliss. The No. 9 Rebels are laying 5.5 at home. I'm taking the points.
Start with the best unit on the field: Missouri's defense. Ole Miss's offense looks elite on paper, but most of that came against Louisville, Charlotte, Florida and Vanderbilt, all ranked 103rd or worse in points allowed. The one real defense the Rebels saw, LSU, held their run game to 63 yards on 25 carries and made Chambliss throw 48 times. Missouri has allowed 470 rushing yards all season and just 3.0 points per trip inside the 40. Its pass rush, with 18 sacks and 43 tackles for loss, gets an Ole Miss line missing Jalan Chapman, Emanuel Faulkner and Enoch Wangoy.
Flip the field and Missouri has the edge again. Florida ran for 302 yards on Ole Miss, and LSU ran for 172. Jamal Roberts carries the Tigers' offense, and this week Roberts gets a Rebels defense playing without safety Edwin Joseph. A steady, clock-chewing ground game means fewer possessions, and fewer possessions make 5.5 a lot of points to cover.
The turnover battle points the same way. Missouri has 3 giveaways and 8 takeaways. Ole Miss has 7 and 6, and Chambliss has thrown an interception in 4 of 5 games.
Yes, the public will point to Florida. Ole Miss lost there 28-52, and Missouri beat the Gators 45-17 at home. That's not my reason. The 52-17 win at Vanderbilt showed Ole Miss is still a top-10 team. This pick rests on matchups that have held all season.
The risk is Simmons. Against Troy and Texas A&M, the passing game managed 91 and 147 yards. If Ole Miss jumps ahead and stacks the box against Roberts, Simmons has to win it through the air. Chambliss could also copy Mississippi State's blueprint, 360 passing yards at 9.5 per attempt, against a secondary that gives up big plays when it breaks.
Still, a defense this good getting more than a field goal is the side I want. Missouri +5.5.

QUARTERBACK
Austin Simmons is MIZ's confirmed starter
8.64 Y/AAustin Simmons is MIZ's confirmed starting quarterback. Current-week reporting identifies him as Missouri's starter; Friday's availability transcription removes his earlier probable designation. 2026 line: 1417 passing yards, 64.6% completions, 8.64 yards per attempt, 14-1 TD-INT over 6 games.
Trinidad Chambliss is MISS's confirmed starter
8.25 Y/ATrinidad Chambliss is MISS's confirmed starting quarterback. October 14 matchup reporting identifies him as the incumbent starter. 2026 line: 1435 passing yards, 70.1% completions, 8.25 yards per attempt, 11-4 TD-INT over 5 games.
TRENCHES
MIZ: 77.3 rushing yards allowed per game to MISS's 176.4
99.1 YPGMissouri allows 77.3 rushing yards a game over 6 games, so most opponents have been held in check on the ground. Ole Miss gives up 176.4 over 5. The sheet doesn't say who either side has played, so schedule could account for some of the gap. On the road, Missouri's run defense is the stronger unit, and the Rebels' front is the one more likely to give ground.
PACE & SCRIPT
MIZ @ MISS carries a 58.5 market total
58.5At 58.5, this sits 8 points over the 50.5 median, so the market expects plenty of scoring and few empty possessions. The sheet offers only the number. It cracks if drives bog down or the clock keeps running on long, slow possessions. A bettor can watch whether early drives finish in touchdowns, since a total this high needs them.
MIZ: 17.7 points allowed per game to MISS's 28
10.3 PPGMissouri is allowing 17.7 points per game over 6 games, close to last season's 18.9, while Ole Miss is giving up 28 over 5, well above its 21.1 last season. Missouri's defense looks like a steady identity; Ole Miss's slide is newer and could tighten as the sample grows. On the road, Missouri brings the defense more likely to dictate a lower-scoring game.
TURNOVERS
MIZ: 0.5 turnovers committed per game to MISS's 1.4
0.9 TOMissouri is protecting the ball at 0.5 turnovers per game over 6 games, while Ole Miss is coughing it up 1.4 times over 5. Both flipped from last season, when Missouri was at 1.31 and Ole Miss at 0.93, and turnover rates swing hard over a few games. Expect both to move back toward the middle, so price this game more on how each offense moves the ball than on giveaways holding.
MISMATCH
MIZ: 17.7 points allowed a game to MISS's 28
17.7 VS 28Missouri allows 17.7 points a game, close to last season's 18.9, so its defense looks like the real thing. Ole Miss gives up 28 over five games, a clear jump from 21.1 last season. Ole Miss may tighten up some, but five games of this is a real warning sign. At home, Ole Miss probably has to outscore Missouri rather than shut it down.
